This is going to sound odd, but…
when our elderly cat lost control but wasn’t bead enough to put down, we put a large litter box in the jacuzzi tub, which we seldom use in our Master bath. That way cleanup was easy if he had an accident.
We shower 98% if the time, so it was no sacrifice for us. 🤷

I live in a small house as well and I removed the door from the linen closet in my bathroom and put the litter box on the floor in there. It’s right beside the toilet so I never forget to clean it out and I clean the litterbox twice a day. My cat is very particular and she will not use a dirty box.

You haven’t recently change the type of litter? I made that mistake and my cat hates perfumed litter and will not use it. It’s getting more difficult to find unscented litter but it does exist.

There is one litter, a bit more expensive, called Cat Attract and it really does work in terms of getting the cat to use the litter box.

My cat is 19 and she sometimes pees outside the box. She will also poop outside the box if she is mad at me.

I don’t understand how there is no door to the basement…but the cat goes down there.🤷

You mentioned a dismantled shed? Must smell interesting to her of outdoors and maybe rodents?

Peeing etc is marking. If this started when the contents of the basement were altered?

im not sure how to explain it. you’d have to see it to understand.

when you walk in the front door there is a landing and two stairs. one goes up to the main floor, one goes to the basement. basement has a hallway with 3 bedrooms and a bathroom (those do have doors) and a large main room which does not. the mian floor and bottom or not that far apart really. its a rather square house.

Solved the problem. just like i thought, it was the stuff in the garage. there’s a bunch of stuff near her litter box that must have bothered her. i just moved it to another wall that had nothing next to it in the garage and she started using it. 🙂

So glad to hear it. 🙂 Cats can be very sensitive, can’t they? I hope she’ll be fine now, and your difficulties are over. 👍

There you go then Guessed it was that… smelled all wrong to her
Incidentally a tip re cats who spread litter around… Boycat loves doing that!. I have a dog crate I am not using and I now put the litter tray in the base of that.Works grand…

I am using garden compost now; the stuff you plant seeds etc in. They love it. And it is inexpensive.
