A little back ground of myself…

I attended Catholic School from 2nd through 8th grade and was an altar boy for 4 years. I went through my confirmation while in high school and did several retreats with my parish.

I enjoyed being Catholic…

but all the years I was in Catholic school or at church events… I never knew we had a catechism… until a years ago when I bought one.

There have been some people on these forms talking about the Baltimor catechism and the new CCC… I don’t think anyone knows how lucky they are to have either of these tools given by the church to understand the faith.

In high school I was exposed to members of other faiths, baptist, mormons, muslim, jehova witness, and some others.

But, the subject about faith and God never really ever came up… sure people talked about stuff… but never really set up attacks on others faith.

It hasn’t been recently that I have been exposed to attacks on the faith by both Catholics and non-Catholics. There are a few people who can give good detailed complete answers to the faith, the current Pope is one of them, and there are some people like myself that can’t we can piece together parts of the truth and try to make it work, but we can’t fully comprehend it and, put it into a good defense for the faith, as some others can. I have found it easier just to live the faith then try to piece all the information together…

I was wondering if this is just because of bad Catechesis or if it is because I’m not suppose to understand it all.

**We will NEVER “understand it all.” As God said to Isaiah,

Isaiah 55:8-9
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

But you DO sound like a victim (or survivor) of bad catechesis.

LIVING your faith is the key. And now you can make up for lost time.

God bless you!**

also because as adult Catholics we should be engaging in continuing faith formation, on our own through reading and study, especially of scripture, but also of the CCC or resources based upon it, and through our parishes and dioceses. There is no excuse for an adult CAtholic not to engage in regular bible reading, since ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ, as Jerome says.

anyone who feels his instruction in the doctrine has been only basic cannot help, I feel, but eager to learn more. Did your formal education in academics and practical education in application of what you learned ceased when you left high school? I certainly hope not.

The case for lifetime study is a good one. I had a Catholic Education up through four years of college before Vatican II. I have studied our Faith for more than 40 years and still feel like I have barely scratched the surface. I would issue one warning to anyone who thinks their knowledge will get them into heaven. Knowledge of the Faith is not a bad thing, but a relationship of love with God in all his manifestations is probably of more importance.

I would venture that Satin has an almost perfect knowledge of what we call Theology, but it gains him nothing because he lacks love in his relationship to his creator. Theologians, Apologists, or whatever can have a vast knowledge and still find their boodie in hell.👍
