How many catholic and non catholics here have read the catechism of the catholic church?

If you’re a catholic and you’ve never read it, why not? I would have thought it was a vital book to be familiar with, after the Bible. No?

If you’re not a catholic, but have issues with the catholic church, such as the papacy, marian dogmas, praying to the saints, and so on, have you actually consulted the official teachings of the church on the matter? If not, why not? If you have, has the explaination in the catechism made sense to you? Some examples would be good.

The Catechism sheds light on the Bible, and vica-versa.

What I find of great value is the referencing. Sources, early writings, scriptures, are all thoroughly referenced. It’s a very academic piece of work in that sense.

good question 🙂

i’ve read parts of it but not some other parts. I want to read the whole thing one day…

I purchased a nice plastic bound version of the CCC from the Goodwill many years ago…it’s a thick book…interesting in parts…I’ve not read the whole thing by any stretch of the imagination…but then I’ve not read both volumes of The Journal of George Fox either.🙂

I have two copies in my home. One is paper-back the other is hard-bound.I read and refer to it often. The CCC is a great treasure. And yes I have and read daily Bible(NAB and/or my DR Challoner edition:D).

I started to read my CCC from the beginning a long time ago, I did not complete it, but it is an awesome reference which I do use. I also read from my Bible (NRSV and D-R) all the time. The CCC comes in very handy during Bible Study Classes. 👍
God Bless,

I do a lot of my reading of the CCC while I am reading my Bible. If I get to reading the Bible and a question pops up in my head I will use the CCC as a reference.

God bless you

I bought a copy 5 years ago and I still haven’t read it. I don’t know why but it’s the same with finishing the Bible. No matter how hard I try I just haven’t found the right inspiration.

Yes I have read the Cathechism several times. I love it. I reread it and use it for reference.

Yes I’ve read the CCC. I wanted to make sure I knew the doctrines of the Church before I joined, I love it, not as much as the Bible, but still a great book.

Seems to be mostly catholic responses - as would be expected - apart from our Quaker friend 👍 Im curious about my non catholic brothers and sisters - anyone read the catechism to address specific issues/questions you had about the catholic church, and if you did, did you find it illuminating?

**i read Sacred Scripture every day and the Catechism explains the Teachings of the Church and the Traditions of the Church as they reinforce Jesus’ Teachings.

i’ve read the Catechism cover to cover twice!
**
i use it as a reference almost daily for my own questions or to answer others questions. Here’s a great search website for the Catechism (scborromeo.org/ccc.htm)

The first time i read it i was trying to prove why i shouldn’t return to the Catholic faith (the Truth is difficult!).

After reading it, i realized how everything fit together perfectly!

The second time i read it, i read many of the references to Sacred Scripture and the writings of early Church Fathers and the Pope’s throughout the 2000 year history of Catholicism, and i was stunned.

The current Catechism, dated 1992, is a fantastic reference tool. It was commissioned by Pope John Paul II in 1986 and then Cardinal Ratzinger, now Papa Benedictus XVI, chaired the commission of 12 Cardinals and Bishops who worked on it for 6 years.

Every current or prospective Catholic, or even doubting Protestants and non-believers, must read it and be familiar with Church teaching and the reasons for the teachings!!!

The Truth is a beautiful thing!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

I’m in the process of reading it. But then again, I’m a recent convert. Although I do watch that Fadda Corapi Catechism series.

I’ve never read it cover to cover. I do frequently quote from it and reference it however. I see it more like an encyclopedia. Not many people read an Encyclopedia like a novel, but we frequently refer to them.

I have it, but I’ve not read it. I treat it as a reference book, not as a “good read”. I can find most of the teaching of the Church in older books anyway.

The CCC could be a third of its length, and lose nothing in the process - it is far too wordy - like most documents from that pontificate. Brevity really is the soul of wit. For a much better summary of Catholic doctrine, try this:
There is also a “Companion” to the CCC, which is worth getting - it supplies the complete contexts for the quotations, and provides many documents either entire, or in large part. It may be of interest to catechists - or to anyone who likes checking sources.

Excellent topic Guy.👍
Sad to say I have not read the catechism. I have, however, a bookmarked on-line catechism with a search engine that I use frequently as reference both for mayself and for discussions here. I also appreciate when people here (catholic and non-catholic alike) post references to the catechism in support of their positions or questions/concerns.

Peace
James

That is one of the things that stuck out for me too. I love how it combines all of these different sources into one seamless teaching.

And yes, I’ve read the whole thing.

I have read from cover to cover:
  • Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • United States Catholic Catechism for Adults
  • Light for Life (Byzantine Catholic Catechism)
I still have the Social Catechism and the (unofficial) Maronite Catholic Catechism on my bookshelf to read (I might get to them this Fall.
