I heard from someone in my RCIA class mention there was a new catechism coming out with a blue cover. I can’t find anything here or on Google. Is there a 3rd edition coming out or is it something else?

Yes. The new edition with the revised wording regarding the death penalty has been published. It also contains 100 pages of “additional material.” I don’t recall the description of the additional material but you can find the new edition advertised on the USCCB website.

I don’t shop online. Will it be available by mail order or in a Catholic bookstore?

If you go to the “Contact Us” information on that USCCB link, you find a phone number where you can call and order.

I am sure bookstores will stock it after publication, or, they will be happy to order one for you.

When people donate the first edition, we throw those away because they are so out of date.

It is time for an update!
Sources at the USCCB are denying rumors that the latest edition is being printed in pencil, for daily updates.

Good stewardship of God’s creation is already well covered in the Catechism. 2415 - 2418 speaks of animal life, you can search the index for the other references. Pope Francis is reminding us that there are sins against these God’s laws regarding stewardship

My thoughts exactly. The Catechism of Trent is awesome. I have a CCC and more than likely will not purchase a new one due to a few changes that are not infallible

I already bought the red USCCB paperback edition about a year and a half ago and then discovered I can just read it online for free at the Vatican website. I’ll keep this edition because it is big and fat and good to press leaves in, but I’m not spending money on any further hardcopy or paperback editions.

If Pope Francis is so concerned about eco-sins, I’ll start by saving trees.

I think we all try to do the best we can. In my flower garden, I am a weed digger instead of a weed sprayer. Hubby says I wouldn’t have to do so much work, and the garden would be cleaner, if I just sprayed the weeds. But I have all kinds of wildlife in my flower garden – little frogs, lizards, even a couple of tiny ribbon snakes that burrow underground, not to mention the bumblebees, butterflies and ladybugs – toxic sprays could kill them all.

I try to recycle plastic water bottles and other plastic containers.

Hubby had dead trees cleared out of our natural forest surrounding our yard, so that saplings would have more room to grow, and to prevent wildfires.

We all try to do our best. I don’t think we need the Pope preaching to us about stewardship. Most of us are conscientious about not polluting our earth. At least here in the U.S. There are some other countries that could afford to clean up their environmental acts.

I always try to remind myself that the Pope is speaking to the whole world, and maybe there are countries where people don’t care about recycling and such. I know I have been trying to do what I can to recycle for years, to the point where when I’m on vacation I will put all my used plastic water bottles in my luggage and bring them home to dump in my recycling can rather than put them in the hotel trash.

I too don’t like Pope Francis preaching at us about ecology when 1) everybody I know does what they can and 2) most of the problem is occurring at a corporate level in foreign countries where we have no say over it. He should be pointing the finger at the companies that want to chop down rainforests and such, but I’m willing to bet most of those people aren’t Catholic and/or don’t care what the Pope says about it.

Unfortunately I think some of the Pope’s focuses are due to his being of a certain age and generation which I won’t expound upon further because when I tried to frankly discuss it, citing sources, someone got upset and flagged my posts, which were pulled. I’ll just leave it at saying I don’t need a catechism to go into pages and pages more detail about stewardship of the planet. Maybe someone else needs that.

There’s nothing wrong wirh a medical society making a strong statement that “Cigarette smoking is bad for your health”. That is true. If this were 1955, it would be a very important truth, because it would be unfamiliar.

But in 2019, equally true, but not an unfamiliar truth.

The two prior popes emphasized truths that were in their time forgotten, such as the Sacredness of the unborn child or marriage between one man and one woman.

Pope Francis emphasizes truths that are at the moment familiar. If it’s in the NY Times this month, it will be in a Vatican statement next month.

If it’s not on CNN this year, you likely won’t hear anything about it from the Vatican during this pontificate.

Please remember this was only a topic meant to ask if there was a new version of the catechism. I am not seeking criticism of the Catechism or the Pope. Since I now have my answer I am going to ask a moderator to lock the thread because I do not care for the direction this topic is going. Thank you.
