How much a part does the catechism play in your life ?

What is the history of the catechism ?
When did it start, how and who updates it and using what authourity ?

Do catholics use it ? Do they find it helpful and easy to understand and agree with ?

How can we track down the history of a particular numbered catechism, when it was created or amended, and what the theological thoughts were behind the statement ?

Again, no interfaith criticism or triumphalism please.

I have read the current CCC cover to cover and readily use it as a reference document. But the most formative catechism for me was the Baltimore Catechism which was in use in Catholic grade schools in the 50s and 60s before Vatican II. Granted it relied upon a question and answer format which lent itself to memorization by hundreds of thousands of Catholic school students. However, when the new scripturally based studies came out when I was in high school, I already had a firm foundation upon which to build.

I have taught a Confirmation class for high school students in my parish and the current CCC along with scripture is perfect for the task.

I read the new Catechism (“CCC”) on a revolving basis; I find it hard for it to grow dull.

I also read the Baltimore Catechism No. 3 from time to time.

There was also a Catechism by St Charles Borromeo, but I don’t know any of the history.

I would view The Didache (written 70AD to 100AD) as the earliest Catechism.

I only use the catechism as a reference. Actually the last time I looked it up was to use it as an official reference for a point I was making in a class.
