As a Catholic I’ve always been taught that there are several types of “works” in the New Testament. (i) Jewish works of the ceremonial Law; (ii) works of the flesh (unaided human effort); and (iii) good works (energized by the Holy Spirit).
Is there anything in Greek or Aramaic that enables us to distinguish which category of “works” are being referred to? …as it is still possible to get into a log-jam with folks over the type of works being referred to in each passage.
