… is a fantastic photoblog documenting a project to photograph all of California’s Cathedrals (Catholic and otherwise). They’re so good, they even managed to make the new Los Angeles Cathedral look beautiful. Highly recommended. (HT: Sullivan)

Pretty cool, but it so sad to see Episcopal Cathedrals look more Catholic then the Roman Catholic Cathedrals. Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco… sigh

One must-see in California that was neglected in this site is the newly-renovated Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Sacramento. Before renovation, this building suffered terribly at the hands of 1970’s “wreckovators.” One would have been hard-pressed to locate the Blessed Sacrament, which until now had been hidden in a side chapel. Now, the tabernacle is front and center, the painted dome (closed over in the 1930’s for structural reasons) has been re-opened, and a larger pipe organ (unfortunately still in the transept rather than in the cavernous rear loft) has replaced the wimpy 1970’s instrument.

Kudos to Bishop William Wiegand, who also made excellent work of the magnificent Cathedral of the Madeleine in his former see of Salt Lake City.

I completely agree, the Cathedral renovations was marvelous and God bless Bishop Wiegand for help restoring it to it’s former glory.

I have never met anyone in person who attacks the Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles who has actually visited the complex in person and studied its architecture from an educated viewpoint.

I have met dozens on the other hand who have never been anywhere near the cathedral and know nothing about architecture yet are quick to deliver ignorant diatribes about how “ugly” it is…

Hi, I am one of those involved in the Cathedrals of California Project. To date we have only shot two cathedrals, and there are many more to go. Be assured that all the cathedrals, including the lovely restoration in Sacramento, will be included as time goes by. Check back to the blog regularly to see our progress!

Aye, my girlfriend used to go to Mass there when she lived in Sacto. I’ve been to Mass there a couple times with her, it’s beautiful.
