RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (UCAN) — Christians held a three-day protest over a Catholic who died after setting himself ablaze in despair after his wife was allegedly tortured by police.

Rashid Masih, a father of four, died in hospital on March 22, four days after dousing himself in kerosene and setting himself alight.
Church sources here say he was overwhelmed by a sense of hopelessness after his wife, a housemaid, was charged with stealing from a Muslim cinema manager in Rawalpindi and tortured by police in front of him.

Their version of events contradicted reports in the secular Italian media and L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican daily, which said the man had been burnt to death by a Muslim.

The mourners chanted anti-Punjab government slogans, demanding “payback for the blood” and the arrest of those they blamed for the death.
“We are not against anyone but demand justice,” Father Anwar Patras, parish priest of Holy Family Catholic Church, told the funeral gathering.
Father Patras called for ecumenical unity in the case. “Rashid’s sacrifice has provided us a stage where we can all unite,” the priest said at the funeral.

Also, Fr Patras ought not to refer to a suicide as a “sacrifice”, although suicide may be part of the culture over there. A Pakistani bishop killed himself in protest several years ago.

Reading these stories about attacks on Christians in India, Pakistan & elsewhere I’ve wondered what I would do – are you still a martyr if you’re killed while running for your life? Cursing your attackers?

It seems that Father Patras was referring to this as a sacrifice assuming that this was a murder and a cover-up, not a suicide. I could be wrong, but that’s what I gathered.

This sounds very extreme, he must have been severely tormented.
 
Get the Christians,Jews,and non-muslims out of that insane asylum if they’ll come.Let them emigrate wherever they’d like to go.Then build A giant wall around it and all the other whack Muslim countries-cut off all aid,trade,communication with these intolerant peoples who follow a murderous ideology instead of a religion.Station spy satelites over them and if they make one false move with their nuclear arsenals,nuke them.Otherwise we’ll check in every two hundred years or so AND SEE IF THEY ARE STILL IN THE DARK AGES OR IF THEY HAVE ATTAINED CIVILIZATION BEFORE WE HAVE ANY TRUCK WITH THEM.

At the very least we must pitty and pray for those who do bad to others, rather than condem them. You have taken the better option. 😉

i can’t for the life of me figure out why the US does business w/ China or Pakistan…

atheistic or muslim countries… hardly anything is made in the US anymore… no comprendo… :confused:

that bishop didn’t seem too catholic… Ctholics dont condone suicide… hmmm …:confused:

This is an absolute tragedy. I feel very badly for the man and his wife. I hope their tormentors will repent.
 
I don’t think these kinds of things happening to culture-Catholics in the East can be considered martyrdom, if they were committed deliberately. The uprising the Middle-East contributes to the whole confusion. And it just gets worse.
