Yesterday I was amazed to learn that the Catholic version of the 10 Commandments is different from the Protestant version of the 10 Commandments.

Can anyone tell me when and how this took place?

I must admit I am somewhat troubled by this.

Thanks

Catholic bibles and Protestant bibles have the exact same commandments in them, written the same way. The version of the commandments that protestants like to throw at Catholics (with the so-called “missing second commandment”) is the short form used for easy memorization that is found in the Catechism. This is called the “Traditional Catechetical Formula.” Right next to the short form, on the very same page for comparison, are the commandments in their entirety as found in every bible. Rest easy, our commandments are exactly the same as theirs. Nothing has been left out. This has been circulating around the internet as a malicious falsehood. See the picture of the page in the Catechism:

There are fourteen imperatives in the commandments, therefore to get ten they must be grouped. Some people have grouped them differently.

There are actually 4 versions - Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Protestant.

And of course 2 Biblical citations: Exodus and Deuteronomy

And even then, those aren’t the all the same: If I recall correctly, Calvinists and Lutherans use a different numbering.

I always felt like the prohibition on idol worship was part of the first commandment, and that it was kind of pointless to split it into a separate one.
