Hello,
I’m new to Catholic Answers, but I wanted to get my story out in the hopes that someone else has had a similar experience and can provide some knowledge and wisdom…
I’m in my junior year of college, and have been dating my boyfriend for almost two years. I’m Catholic and he is non-denominational Christian. We knew each other’s religious affiliations going into our relationship, but we thought-- we both believe in the same God, things can easily work out for us! Now that our relationship has grown more serious and we’ve considered our future, we’ve started having difficult discussions about how we would be married and how we would raise our children.
I would truly love, and I hope, to marry in the Catholic Church. I’ve been raised in the Catholic faith but not educated in the Catholic faith. In a sense, I’ve learned a lot in this relationship about my faith because I’ve had to research to hold my ground in discussions. My boyfriend’s oldest brother is a pastor, and he hopes for his brother to marry us. This wouldn’t be fulfilling the Sacrament of Matrimony in the Catholic Church, and I explained that if we were to go this route, we could have our marriage convalidated, which to my surprise my boyfriend took great offense to. He doesn’t understand why the Church wouldn’t recognize a marriage outside of the Church as valid, and I’m not good at explaining this to him. Does any one have suggestions for me on how to proceed with all of this? A good explanation of convalidation? Suggestions on how we can compromise to meet both of our needs?
This is truly weighing heavy on my heart, and I would greatly appreciate any responses.
Best to you all.
