Hi,does the Catholic Church allow Orthodox to confess or Commune in their Churches or do they have to receive Confirmation first?

I know some people that have left the Catholic Church to attend The Orthodox Church, and they were Confirmed or Chrismated again in the Ortjodox Church.
If the person was already Confirmed in the Catholic Church,is there any significance to his Orthodox Confirmation/Chrismation?

Ive heard that a person can only be baptized once but what about Confirmation/Chrismation.

I’ve also been Chrismated/Confirmed by both the Orthodox and Catholic Church,so tell me what am I? Orthodox or Catholic? Or am I mainly just a Christian attending such and such a Church…

Maybe calling each separate Church this and that and different names promotes Disunity and seems to be putting Christians in different corners…displeasing to unity…

it is true that u can only be baptised and confirmed once…however the Orthodox church see the Roman (and Protestant) sacraments as ‘defective’ so someone who was validly baptised in the name of the trinity from any church is bascily considered a christian by orthodox standards though a ‘defective’ one.

Chrismation (or conformation) is seen by orthodox christians as a way to heal the ‘defectivness’ of the Roman and Protestant baptism/conformation and is thus the regular way of being recieved into the orthodox church for those christians wo were born outside of the Orthodox fold.

may I ask how u have been confirmed in both??? u can be confirmed a Catholic and then decide to the become Orthodox and get confirmed again…but that makes u Orthodox. it’s impossible (sadly) to belong to both at the same time…

unless of course your like me who had a mixed ukrainian Catholic and ukrainian Orthodox family…I was baptised in a church building owned by the ukrainian catholics but the only priest we had available was ukrainian orthodox (this was in a time before the ukrainian orthodox here in oz were in union with the see of Constantinople) and I was bought up a Catholic even though I was offically orthodox (even though techinaly speaking I was an irregular orthodox cause of the ukranian Orthodox’s priest’s lack of unity with the Ecumenical patriarch)…that is the only way I see a perosn as being both…but even then your technically still really one or the other.

Yes, under the specific circumstances outlined in Canon Law.

Can. 844 §3. Catholic ministers administer the sacraments of penance, Eucharist, and anointing of the sick licitly to members of Eastern Churches which do not have full communion with the Catholic Church if they seek such on their own accord and are properly disposed. This is also valid for members of other Churches which in the judgment of the Apostolic See are in the same condition in regard to the sacraments as these Eastern Churches.

The Catholic Church permits it, but the Orthodox do not allow their members to do so.

From the Catholic perspective, no. However, this person is committing a schimsatic act by doing so.

Confirmation cannot be repeated.

You would have to explain in detail your situation, an assessment cannot be given from the information above.

The Orthodox are welcome to return any time.

In which Church was the latest Chrismation?

I was raised Latin Catholic then as a young adult was baptized and Chrismated by Orthodox Church Constantinople.

For many years attended only Orthodox church,3 years ago started to attend and get involved at Catholic church while still attending Orthodoxy but now completely attend Catholic and no more Orthodox.

I have a lot of bitterness of what I went through at Orthodoxy and it’s people and don’t really even want set foot in their churches again.

And it’s been great and helpful to see the Catholic church and it’s people after 16 years.

But the Baptism and Chrismation at Orthodoxy kind of like haunts me still as I used to believe and have the same attitude towards Catholics as the Orthodox do that they are right and others are heretics etc and without valid orders and Sacraments.

I say to myself even if the Orthodox are right I still wouldn’t get involved there or Commune with them as I find their Superior attitude that we are the only truth very distasteful.

So I just go to the Catholic Church but really don’t know if I should keep to Orthodox mentality and belief and stay at Orthodoxy.I have to many problems at Orthodoxy but get along fine and feel at peace with Catholics.

Pray for me if any will and May God remember you.

In Holy Orthodoxy Confirmation can be repeated, and sometimes Orthodox Christians will be re-Chrismated.

One can never be too holy 😉

Yes, I will pray for you. Also I see you have had a difficult time.

It sounds like you were baptised and confirmed in the Latin Church first. If you find an Eastern Catholic Church you like nearby, that is an option too and it is posssible to request a transfer.

Totaly agree…whilst im proud to be a member one of the Ancient churches of the East I too find the Orthodox superiority complex very annoying. but I also find the Catholic (mostly traditionalist) belief that the orthodox are the schismatics excatly the same.

I think if we were to take a step back and look objectivly at the things that seperate the Catholic and Orthodox Churches we would see that not only our common faith stretches back to the Apostolic age but our differences of opinion and Theological differences as well. I dont think its right for either Catholics or Orthodox to declaire either to be schismatic/invalid etc…andby the same token I doubt full communion will ever be restored…I think the best we can hope for is peaceful co-existance 🙂

Yes I was confirmed Catholic first then later by the Orthodox,

If the Catholic Church has the fullness of Christ then why would there be a need for me to receive the Chrism again and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Of course converts normally denounce Or reject Rome and it’s Sacraments like Orthodox do so they receive Chrismation again which they believe would be truly blessed/valid.

But if I’m Catholic and believe in the Catholic Church why would there be a need for any other Church to repeat thiis blessing/Sacrament.

Of course the Orthodox don’t believe in the Catholic church but I don’t really care anymore in what those Orthodox believe and how they feel towards Rome.

Their attitude towards Rome basically stinks whereas the Catholic Church recognizes their priesthood and Sacraments and validity.

How can there be union when as we speak so many schisms are taking place within Orthodoxy because so many of them refuse better relations with Rome and therefore break away from the Bisops.

But of course the Eastern Catholics are something to be noticed…

Lord have Mercy

schisms have been happening since the beginning of the christian religion and they will continue until our Lord returns. the catholic church is hardly immune…SSPX, ordination of women priests in various parts of the world, here in brisbane a certain priest in a south brisbane parish took and entire congration with him to form his own liberal kind of Catholicism. as we speak there many schisms taking place in the catholic church…excatly the same as Orthodoxy!
