Catholic and protestants too!

I never presume to state what members of other denominations teach or don’t teach. I have read enough falsehood written and espoused about what the Catholic Church teaches by individuals who are not members of the Church to only believe what a person of a particular denomination tells me about his/her own denomination.
When I had to write a paper on the Mennonites, for instance, I sent them a copy of the newsletter I wrote. Everything was factual based on Mennonite teaching. Are there differences between Catholics and non-Catholics? Yes. Are these differences insurmountable? Not as long as we remain in dialogue with one another. Dialogue is communication across differences. It always starts with what we have in common.
Jesus, before His death, prayed that all might be one. The divisions and rifts that continue to exist are indeed scandalous, as if Christ could be divided.
Like our Holy Father, I do not use the term Protestant. Instead I use separated brothers and sisters. Those who belong to the various denominations are not responsible for the actions that took place 500 years ago. We are first of all brothers and sisters in Christ.
It is only recently that I learned that Roman Catholic, the appellate that most of us claim, actually came from Protestants during the Reformation to indicate those who remained loyal to the Pope in Rome.
The Catholic Church does allow us to worship with our separated brothers and sisters as long as we have first attended Mass.
That’s interesting, so they wouldn’t get upset if you came to my methodist church?

If only all the catholics I’ve spoken to were as nice as you… 😉
But seriously, we do not let abortions go unoticed! This is not true at all! But then again, my church is methodist and I can only speak for them and not all the other denominations of which there are soooooo many:whacky:…

Do you think it is wrong for me to first go to Roman Catholic Mass and then later that day go to a Methodist church at 6:30pm for their devotion / service?:bible1:

And why would that be wrong? Because I see no wrong in that?🤷
So long as you seek a church that holds fast to the truth, and not a church that better fits your opinions and concerns, you’ll be doing God’s Will. 👍

Not at all. I have visited many different denominations. My grandson belonged to a cub scout troop that often had events at the AME church.
If a person invites me to their church, I reciprocate and invite them to mine. I have gotten one negative response to this invitation. The woman was a zealous new convert to her Pentecostal Holiness Church. She did not understand how I could simply observe her service. There were things which I saw (described on other threads) which I found disturbing in light of the Jim Jones catastrophe.
As a regular visitor to a local Assembly of God was able to dispel many myths and misunderstandings that members had of Catholicism.
What I cannot do when I visit a different denomination is take Communion. Receiving the Eucharist involves more than consuming the Body and Body of Jesus Christ. It is also a statement of community. To receive when visiting an Episcopal or Anglican church would be to submit to the Bishop of Canterbury. To receive at a Presbyterian church would indicate that I accept the teachings of Calvin, which I do not. With a son-in-law who is a Presbyterian minister, I have learned that the Calvinistic idea of predestination was originally meant to be hopeful, “We are predestined to be children of God,” and not how it is interpreted by many.
I like my granddaughter’s analogy regarding this exclusiveness regarding Communion. I can visit different countries and enjoy the various cultures, but unless I am a citizen I cannot vote.

I agree. I have met many people who “church shop” for that one place that “feeds” them rather than a place to worship the Triune God.

There were annual pulpit exchanges where I lived in WI. The newly elevated bishop was the Most Reverend Raymond Burke. It was understood that the visiting preacher could not perform any functions that are the exclusive domain of the priest.

Well done, I feel quite proud of you joachimrana! Do you still talk to your first minister?

I want to my Methodist Church on sunday at 6:30pm …the ministers were on holiday, so I didn’t see them.

Zundrah, I think I feel something of what you’re going through. Probably the hardest thing about me thinking of converting is leaving my Lutheran church I grew up in. I no longer live in that community so that’s a little easier, but my mom has still mentioned “well, what if you moved back?” “What about holidays?”

This is something that some (not all) cradle Catholics don’t realize (including a few that have replied to you in a most haughty manner). It is to leave a faith tradition that has shaped your beliefs your whole life. I wouldn’t say that any of the people who shaped my* beliefs are “lesser Christians” than the devout Catholics I have met, which is the impression I’ve gotten from some (definitely NOT all) people on this site. Kind of the “well, they’re just a bunch of heretics, why in the world would you want to worship with --gasp-- them?” mindset. Those “heretics” are my family, thank you very much.

At the same time I think that if God is truly calling me to be Catholic, that things will be okay and He will give me what I need to deal with the separation from the faith of my upbringing.*

This is exactly how I feel!

I can’t leave my Methodist church… But that doesn’t mean that I’m leaving my catholic church either, the times on sunday are different for both of my Churches. 😃 So it makes it possible to attend both! Amen!
