Catholic, Anglican scholars agree on Mary
SEATTLE, May 17 (UPI) – Anglican and Roman Catholic theologians opened the door to reunification by saying their beliefs about Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, are in agreement.
The accord would drop Anglican opposition to Roman Catholic teachings that Mary was free of original sin and assumed bodily into heaven.
The Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission said Catholic beliefs about Mary are ‘consonant,’ or in agreement, with teachings in the Bible.
Commission Co-Chairman and Archbishop Peter Carnley of Perth, Australia, said the Anglican complaint dogmas about Mary are not provable by scripture would ‘disappear,’ the BBC reported.
The commission introduced the report, ‘Mary: Hope and Grace in Christ,’ in Seattle at a Roman Catholic mass and planned a London introduction Thursday.
The document, which the Vatican and Anglican Consultative Council will consider, stirred evangelical fears that the Catholic Church is prepared to consider unity with the Anglicans strictly on its own terms, the Times of London reported.
