Ok, so I know that Japan has only like one percent of their population as Christians (mostly Catholic) and I’ve actually found a couple of anime series and movie pretty pro Catholic. Trigun and Tokyo Godfathers both really good shows and moving. So, yeah crazy or what?

In case you’re interested, the Japanese singer KOKIA was raised a Christian and still professes belief in God in some of her songs (which are in both English and Japanese), although whether she is still a practicing Christian or not, I don’t know.

Here’s an example of her singing (in English): youtube.com/watch?v=jkUVJQ042sM

And you can find her on iTunes and Amazon.

The cool thing about anime as opposed to western media is that while you don’t run into many (if any) explicitly Christian or Catholic themes, the shows are rarely hostile to that belief system. There are plenty that contradict it, sure, but there are also a lot that mesh very nicely with catholic beliefs.

In the case of Trigun, though, it was actually written by a Catholic convert, and the symbolism and themes of forgiveness are entirely intentional. 👍

One thing about that… if you watch the first FullMetal Alchemist anime series it does have a message if God exists he’s pretty big jerk, opposed to Brotherhoods’s message: God is pretty awesome and keeps mankind and it’s creations from destroying the world… Just saying…

Reason #101 why I need to stop being lazy and finally watch brotherhood…:o

It’s on my to-do list, as soon as I can get to it.

Has anybody here on CAF heard of Superbook?
I’ve heard of it, but I only know it was a children’s anime intended to teach japanese kids about the bible. I’ve actually heard it was pretty good. Other than that, I don’t know anything.

However, as someone who LOVES Brtherhood and thinks it’s a masterpiece, it doesn’t have a progod message. If anything it does depict him as a conniving jerk. Oh it does in a way show that he has his own concept of justice but don’t think it shows him as being a loving god or anything.

I don’t know any anime that have a pro-god message though although most anime I see have very moral lessons that even I live by.

Hoho! I remember watching it as a kid. Loved it!

OK, I guess I’ll watch it and decide for myself. Either way, it’s apparently mandatory for anime fans at this point. 😃

The only pro-god anime I can think of might be the aforementioned Trigun, though the emphasis is more on forgiveness than the concept of God himself. Most anime that include supernatural elements don’t have anything resembling a single god, so I can’t think of anything else. The positive messages I see are generally more about taking care of people, sacrifice, and doing your best. They’re rarely explicitly religious.

How about Ah! My Goddess?

Haven’t seen it, sorry. If I watch/read a romance, it’s generally shojo. But if it is pro-god, how does that come across? From what I’ve heard, it doesn’t fit the monotheistic model, either. 🤷

No offense man, but these are OEL’s (Original English Language) which have a pretty big stigma inside the “mainstream” manga and anime community. Still they are very on their own.
If they can produce a good story and art, why should it matter where it comes from?
Mark Crilley, Sophie Chan, Mikhail Dingle, (YouTube artists): VERY talented. With the latter two (not quite so much for Mark Crilley, but he’s still really good), if you didn’t know who was behind the pen, you’d think it was from Japan. There are also many on deviantart.com who show huge potential.
As far as the original topic of this thread goes, have you heard of ‘Kids on the Slope’? It’s not a supernatural anime or anything but two of the main characters are Catholic (and are depicted very accurately, I must say). It takes place in a part of Japan where the Christian population is (or was, the anime takes place in the 60’s) relatively high.
