Komosta, everyone.

I was wondering if anyone knows of the activities of the Eastern Orthodox in the Philippines. How do the local apologetics groups handle them? Do they welcome them?
It’s neither here nor there; since Orthodoxy in the Philippines isn’t big yet, Filipino apologists focus their efforts more in combating Protestant objections. As for being welcomed…well, I found out quite recently that not only was I taken off as a moderator of Defensores Fidei’s Yahoo group (a move I expected anyway after formally coming into Orthodoxy), but I was all together taken off as a member as well.

If I might ask, what are your reasons for converting into Orthodoxy? Are you under the Greek or the Russian churches, or in something else? 🙂

It would be a long story if I tell it here, but it started with seeing Divine Liturgy and realizing its ancient beauty, and then going on from there. The Orthodox Church here in the Philippines is under the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

I see. I wouldn’t say whether your decision is good or not, but good luck on your being Orthodox. 🙂

I’ll agree that the Divine Liturgy is quite grand (even in ancient times, the Roman Liturgy is actually quite modest compared to other liturgies around at that time; no, I’m not denigrating the Roman Rite here). I have a CD of the Divine Liturgy in Greek that I listen to from time to time.

Don’t you think it is just logical for them to formally cancel your membership? You aren’t a Catholic anymore, so there’s no point in your staying on in a Catholic Apologetics organization, right?
Just a thought.

That’s illogical, since I have not even posted anything against the Catholic Church in Defensores Fidei. If we go by logic here, then I should also be taken off Catholic Answers for merely being Orthodox, but thankfully those who administer the board have a more open mind. I wouldn’t mind being taken off as a moderator, since there’s reason for them to discontinue my post as mod. But taken off as a member? I don’t see the point.

Manila (Agenzia Fides) – Priests, religious, laity, heads of associations and movements, all met in Manila to reflect on the relationship between the Word of God and the life of the Filipino people. The initiative took place as preparation for the upcoming Synod of Bishops, which will take place in Rome in October 2008 and that will focus on the theme: “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church.” The Convention was promoted by “Don Bosco Study Center” of Parañaque (Metro Manila), along with the Salesian Family present in the islands. The encounter was attended by over 700 people, including priests, seminarians, religious, and laity of various congregations and dioceses, who participated in moments of reflection, study, examination, with conclusions that they will take back to their communities of origin. The encounter also included presentations from four Scripture experts, who spoke on the influence of the Word of God in human history and specifically, on the People of God, the time of Moses, the Old Testament, the New Testament with Saint Paul, and within life in the Philippines. Bishop Broderick Soncuaco Pabillo, Auxiliary Bishop of Manila and appointed delegate from the Filipino Bishops’ Conference to attend the Synod in Rome, presented the “Themes and methods of the Synod in Rome 2008.” Fr. Jean Louis Ska, SJ, professor of Old Testament Exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, spoke on “The role of the Torah in the Community of the Israeli Covenant.” Fr. Gil Alinsanga, SSP, professor in New Testament studies, presented the “Saint Paul’s proclamation of the Word to the first Christian community.” Sr. Miriam Alejandrino, OSB, professor of Sacred Scripture, spoke on the “Breaking the Word in the Church of the Poor.” As the ANS News Agency mentions, the Don Bosco Center of Studies in Paranaque City its own Theology School in 1983, with the decree of the Sacred Congregation for Catholic education it was granted affiliation to the Faculty of Theology of the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome, enabling it to grant the ecclesiastical degree of Bachelor in Theology (BTh). The Center also offers diploma courses in Spirituality, Religious Studies, Catechetics and Youth Ministry as well as other updating courses in Pastoral Ministry and Consecrated Life. ¶ (Agenzia Fides 29/7/2008)

Perhaps they have a policy of having only Catholics as members? 🤷 I don’t know much about the group though. I don’t think that it’s not so much as posting anything against the Catholic Church. But the mere fact that you became Orthodox makes it plain for everyone to see that you don’t adhere to the Catholic faith anymore. Thus, why should you remain a member of a group that defends its teachings?

Lots of advantages for them–for one, since it’s an Apologetics group, then what better way to do Apologetics than to explain it to a non-Catholic? AFAIK there are non-Catholics (Protestants) in the group as well, so their action doesn’t make much sense. Unless they also took those non-Catholics off.

I would like to clarify that Milliardo was a member and moderator of the “Pinoy Defensor Fidei” yahoo group, which is not the same as the Defensores Fidei Foundation (although the two groups work together).

The yahoo group of Defensores Fidei is called “Apologia-Ph”, with an invitation-only membership that, to a certain extent, overlaps with that of Pinoy Defensor Fidei.

Basically, the larger Philippine-based Filipino Catholic yahoo groups that are orientated to orthodox Catholic thought in the Internet are:
  1. Apologia-Ph – originally focused on apologetics, has now broadened its scope to include anything about the Catholic Church. Strictly by invitation only.
  2. Pinoy Defensor Fidei (PDF) – originally focused on apologetics, has now broadened its scope to include anything about the Catholic Church.
Apologia and PDF share many of the same members and some moderators, but only Apologia is a “DFF” group, so to speak.
  1. Katoliko – more on the pastoral and spiritual side, with Tagalog as the primary language
  2. Ecclesia Dei Philippines – focused on promoting the Traditional Latin Mass and awareness of liturgical issues. SSPX-style polemics and posts trashing the Novus Ordo as “invalid”, “evil”, etc. are NOT welcome.
Since many people (including myself) are members of all four groups, cross-posting occurs very frequently.

Just wanted to say Hello. I’m quite new here and am joyous to see other devout Filipino Catholics. I hope that in finding you all and your sincerity in faith I may be grown closer to Christ.
