Hi! I’m new to this web site and am excited about that. I’m interested in finding out why we, as Catholics, believe and do some of the practices we have. When I went to Catholic grade school and asked why we did something, I was told “because Father says”!!
Love to all!

hello, the best way to start is by asking the questions. Their are a lot of people on this forum that are very educated in the church. I learn much here.

The book they give out at Catholic Answers for basic faith is Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth. It’s like $1 + Shipping. But if you want free stuff, I’d recommend the tracts linked above. Here’s another post I have made to seekers…some of it may interest you:
I do not know how deeply you wish to get into it. Of course, pray to God specifically what you want. Like, “Please Jesus I wish to follow Your Church as You taught us. Please help me do this.”

Then, depending on how deep you want to get into it, these are resources I recommend:

The Catechism - this will teach you the faith in nice paragraph form. It’s nice cuz you can search the index for a certain subject and just go to that paragraph and read. Here’s an online Catechism if you don’t want to buy one. 🙂

Then of course there would be introductory books on the faith. Maybe read “The Compact History of the Catholic Church” by Schreck. I also hear good things about “Short History of the Catholic Church” by Jose Orlandis.

Peter Kreeft is also a good philosopher and Catholic who has many books, like Prayer for Beginners or Fundamentals of the Faith. He also has a bunch of free audio at his website.

Of course, also if you are into audio, like listening to MP3’s, you might want to browse different topics from the Catholic Answers Live radio show over here. You can even search there on different subjects.

If you want a book comparing different Christian stances on salvation, I’d recommend The Salvation Controversy by James Akin.

Some other books I have found interesting are the lives of the saints. Sometimes the best way to come to the truth is to see it effected in someone else’s life. The Spiritual Letters of Padre Pio (Secrets of a Soul) are very filled with love and hope.

For simple methods of enhancing your spirituality, read up on St. Therese the Little Flower. She was known for her simple life and devotions, and I think this could very much help you. Perhaps someone can recommend a good book on her.

If you are looking for ways to discern what God would like you to do, I recommend a talk on discernment by speaker Phil Krill.

If you want to get deeper, I would recommend reading the writings of the Fathers of the Church.

There are also some very wise spiritual people over on the Spirituality forum here. They could probably answer something if you had a very specific question. 🙂

God bless you. 🙂

Welcome! 👋

Feel free to ask questions. Marco Polo gave some great recommendations for further reading. If you have any specific questions, let us know!

Welcome Kram

I have learned so much from the forums it is hard to believe. I use a bunch of the stuff for bible classes and background material. It proves to be a valuable source of information. And yes there are some very good posters here that have helped me understand my faith in many ways. Hope I can help in ways others have helped me.

Almost forgot,

Yes there are reasons for what the Church teaches. I have been in situations like yours where they say “because Fr. so and so says”. That doesn’t fly these days as we want answers. They are available if we look.
