Not really.

I’m simply saying that it’s not required, at least in my diocese, that “obey” be part of the wedding vows.

I want to know if she had to say this, and if so, could she provide some sort of documentation to this.

Sure. Mutual submission is the best recipe for marriage. I can’t think of a better formula for a successful, happy, and holy union.

I’m not arguing against it. 🤷
I’m not married! Wait a minute…where are all these assumptions coming from! 😃 I am a minor, as stated previously. I have still struggled with these questions. I do not believe in promising to obey the man, and in my church, as well as in my teaching, I have been told/taught that this is a crucial part of the wedding vows.
so far I have been made male and given a husband…all I need now is a family! 👍

I feel bad for confusing everyone…thought y’all followed the dramatic interrogation of the “doesn’t this…” and knew that I was a minor, woefully single. 😉
It’s just as I said, I am struggling with the very idea of a woman being made to submit herself, her will, to a man. Women are perfectly capable, and sometimes more so! of making decisions to help their families and themselves. I can’t see myself adopting the attitude of my own family, where my poor grandma is treated like dirt by my grandpa, because he is the “man.” Or even w/ a person I love very much, who maintains that she cannot question decisions that are Wrong, simply because God put the man in charge.
🤷

I’m not married!
Ah, I see.

So to answer your question: “why do I have to promise to obey my husband?”

You don’t. 🤷

You can go through the entire Nuptial Mass and profess your vows without ever having to say, “I will obey my husband”.

Yipes!

No, no, no, RF. That is not at all what the Church proclaims is a holy marriage.

No husband is permitted to treat his wife “like dirt” in a Catholic marriage. The model is for the husband to love his wife like Christ loves the Church.

What’s not to like about that?
