I’ve recently taken a big interest in astronomy. Just recently I ordered myself the astro master 70 EQ.

I’ve been looking for a Orthodox astronomical study of the stars that I can buy that is completely Catholic and Traditional. I dont mind buying a book that perhaps talks about the theory of heliocentrism ( I’m a geocentrist ) but worried about buying the secular books as the chaff is mixed up with the wheat and they are very modern and unorthodox in their teaching.

any suggestions?

nobody? 😦 sniffle come on I live in Ireland and have to go to bed soon * pant pant* lol

Sorry you had to go to bed wondering. . . .😉 Some of the works of Fr. Stanley Jaki might be along the lines of what you are looking for - especially his Is There a Universe?.

Thanks I’ll sleep like a log tonight now 😃

Are there astronomy resources out there that are modern and up-to-date designed with the geocentrist in mind? And then again which kind of geocentrism? The kind that accepts modern astronomical measurements of distances or the ones that think the sun, moon and stars are much closer?

How can one support that the Earth is the center of the universe when science doesn’t support that statement? Hasn’t astronomy proven that planets revolve around their suns and that moons revolve around their planets?

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraph 159

"Faith and science:

"Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason.

Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth."

"Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge, provided it is carried out in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God.

The humble and persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite of himself, for it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are.""

I’m curious as to why anybody can believe in geocentrism.
Good job that Catholics do not have to believe it.

there is no such thing
astronomy is a science, not a topic of theology or dogma

sigh cradle Catholics…
No of course not. God did not make the stars and planets did he? and he sure didnt create science so lets just leave him out of this shall we?

what an absolute stupid and idiotic statement to make puzzleannie. 😃

To the other posters. I did not come here to defend Geocentrism. But looking for some Orthodox teaching on astronomy as opposed to the bull that makes its way across our screens today.

Like I said I dont mind if the book contains heliocentrist views just as long as its somewhat well- rounded and informative.

God created everything. But that doesn’t make astronomy or chemistry, or physics, or biology a branch of theology. Astronomy is just astronomy. There’s no Catholic astronomy.

God is omnipotent and omnipresent in everything. Looking at stars is therefore looking at God.

Open your Bible please.

You know, I came here with a simple question. All I get is argumentative Catholics picking a fight with me over Geo and astronomy not being Catholic.

I’ve since been to a secular forum and had my answer straight away. Sometimes I’m happier to be around non-Christians than I am the intellectual Christian know-it-all some days.

Thanks everyone for sticking to the issue at hand and helping me out. ehhh

What exactly is this “bull” you’re referring too? The speed of light is the same for Catholic as it is for an agnostic as it is for an atheist as it is for a Presbyterian.

Maybe if you were a little more precise in the information you are looking for all the argumentative Catholics could help you out a little bit.

Why don’t you find an old Astrology book? Even the new ones are geocentric. 😉 Seriously, you should look for stuff from Babylonia or China or Aztec times.

Nope - the math works both ways.

Heliocentrism has been proved wrong. What is left is acentrism and geocentrism.
So you are claiming that the consenus view of the scientific community categorically states that heliocentrism is wrong??

Absolutely - the sun is not the center of the universe. However, acentrism says it could be, but then again so could the earth.
