Catholic at an Ivy League College?

I would say a lot depends on your daughter’s major. If she is going into Math and Science you won’t have as much of a problem with a secular/liberal school if she were going for social sciences. I think sociology and psychology are going to be pretty bad at Yale. (My brother went there). I went to Penn State for engineering. There wasn’t any way to mess up Signals and Circuits.

She wants to go into Pre-Med, eventually becoming an opthamologist.

She also wants to be a wife and mother, so I am not sure how all of that will work out. But that’s another thread!

The list of ‘truly’ Catholic colleges is pretty short. As far as prestigious schools, there is next to nothing. Steubenville and Ave Maria are the two truly Catholic colelges that come to mind right off the bat.

The sad truth is that many self-proclaimed Catholic colleges still have all the negative aspects of a state college. People still party and lack good morals. However, if you go to a smaller Catholic college, you are bound to meet at least a group of people which embody your moral beliefs. That’s what has happened to me in college. I have a relatively small group of friends (mostly Theo majors) who embody my moral principles.

To be honest, Ivy League schools will probably be close to what I have stated here. There will be small groups which you may be able to associate with, but there will be a larger minority of people your daughter will like to avoid…

I talked to one of my Catholic friends who attended Yale.

He says that Yale is much better than it used to be. 10 years ago, the Catholic scene at Yale revolved around an extremely liberal Catholic student center that didn’t do much to ground students in their faith. Since then, the Catholic student center has gotten better, and is now something that an orthodox Catholic might consider.

For more traditionally minded Catholics, there is a Dominican parish off campus that ministers to students.

That is St. Mary’s and it isn’t very “off” campus. It is very close. Great parish. It’s where Fr. McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus is interred (and pending beatification). Highly reccommended.

Reading about everyone’s experience really helped. I have heard of the book you mention and should get a copy. Also, it was either on EWTN or Catholic Answers Live that I **had heard a priest talking who said that (I’m paraphrasing) sending your child to a non-Catholic college was basically like sending them to the devil and that they WILL lose their faith almost guaranteed. ** So I think that made me a little bit paranoid!

I looked at the isi.org link that someone else mentioned and that looks very helpful too.

I find this interesting, since my journey into Catholicism began at a non -Catholic college. (my new GFs were Catholic, and I was fascinated)
