Catholic Betrothal Ceremony

Long story short, under the liturgy and sacraments thread I found out about a “catholic betrothal ceremony”. I am a US Soldier who is being deployed to Iraq this coming spring. My long time girlfriend and I are to be engaged before that time and was wondering if anyone has details on if this existed in a “Book of Blessings” pre vat - ii?

I attend the EF of the mass at Holy Rosary Church in Jersey City New Jersey weekly and would really feel spiritually enhanced if the Church was involved in my engagement as well.

I may be getting ahead of myself, but I wished to be married in the old rite. Is the Holy Father’s “motu proprio” also intended to cover all the sacraments of the old rite as well, baptism, matrimony, last rites, etc?

Such things were usually found in local adaptions to the Ritual rather than the Ritual itself. The 1964 Roman Ritual for use in the USA does contain a rite for engagement (in English). I’m not sure precisely when it was inserted - it is not in the 1961 Collectio Rituum and I don’t think it is there in the 1954 one either.
 
The 1964 Collectio Rituum appears entirely in Latin-English, so the blessing would be included in its Latin form.

Do you have or know where I can find a copy of the text. I do not know if my parish has a copy of 1964 Collectio Rituum and I do not wish to spend the money just for this.

I go to the Holy Rosary EF on occasion, great choir.

I was actually referring to the Weller Ritual and I think it even appeared in his 1952 edition and that might have a Latin text. I’m not sure that the Collectio Rituum has it - I can check tomorrow in the sacristy- but IIRC, it doesn’t.

The English text form the 1964 Ritual can be seen here
 
I’m not sure that a Catholic betrothal ceremony exists but I am relatively sure you could ask your priest to bless your engagement and he probably would. I am not entirely sure about that though.

I checked the *Collectio *and it didn’t appear to have it, so unless someone has the '52 Weller Ritual, I think the 1964 English text is as close as you can get.

Would this be similar to a nun taking temporary vows, so that if after a time of discernment she may leave without breaking vows? Or is there some connotation of permanency with the betrothal ceremony?

I have heard that more than half of engagements break up before the marriage, and the process of discernment works out for the good of the couple when that happens.

Experience also proves that engagements have a likelihood of breaking off when youth and deployment are factors.

This isn’t a “Traditional Catholic” book, but it is a Catholic book, written by a faithful Catholic young woman.

has several great chapters on discernment and some really good checklists that I haven’t found elsewhere to help with discerning a marriage with a Catholic spouse.
 
I do not know the details of it, but I was excited when I read it on the liturgy and sacraments board. I have seen the 1964 and looking forward to addressing this with my parish priest.

This woman is the love of my life and we have been together for 5 years this coming February. She has been very loyal through past military deployments 2 years in Kosovo, 6 months training in the US, and trips here and there over the years. When I came across this information it seems to present an opportunity for the Church to bless our engagement and encourage spiritual growth while I am deployed.

It is in the single-volume, all-English version of The Roman Ritual 1964.

I can see you not wanting to buy one just for the engagement, but if you tell your priest that it exists, he might have a copy of it in his personal library, or know where he can borrow one.

Also, if you mention it and he doesn’t have one, he may just want to buy one now that they’re available again.

PS: I just noticed that you said your priest is celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass. In that case, there’s a very good chance that he has one, or can get one, and likely a good chance that he’d be more than happy to do the betrothal ceremony.
