Catholic Bible Apps?

I am very disappointed. Our protestant brothers and sisters have many beautiful and well-designed bible apps, including multiple english audio versions of both the OT and the NT for free. But Catholics? Seems we have absolutely nothing comparable.

Why on earth is there not an app that has, say, the entire NAB or NRSV-CE including audio available as a smart-phone app? I know I can use the protestant apps, but it’s lame that I can’t ever listen to the Book of Wisdom or Sirach or Tobit because Catholics I guess aren’t up on our digital game.

Does any such app exist? Or would anyone with app design skills be interested in making one? It may even be a great idea to do a collaborative recording project to read and record the whole NAB or NRSV-CE into audio and turn it into an app. In my mind such an app is an immensely important tool for catechesis and evangelization. I long for an app like that with all my heart, and I am terribly disappointed that it doesn’t exist.

Desire and computer skills aren’t all it takes. It would also require obtaining permission from the rights-holders for whatever translation(s) you want to use. Adding audio would be an additional layer of permission needed.

There is the Truth & Life Audio Bible app. For free, you get the whole text of the RSV-CE and the audio for the Gospel of Mark. You have to pay to unlock the rest of the audio, and you can also unlock the Ignatius Study Bible. I think it’s $30 to unlock both—which is the same price as the Ignatius Study Bible New Testament on its own. But (at least this is what I was told) for your purchase price, they will keep adding the Ignatius Study Bible Old Testament volumes as they are released with no additional cost. So, while not free, it is a good deal.

Verbum has an app as well that comes with 6 free Bible translations (RSV-CE, Douay-Rheims, KJV, Clementine Vulgate, a Greek New Testament, ad the Lexham English Bible). I don’t think they have text-to-audio capabilities on the app yet, but they are always adding new features.

But, yeah, it would be nice to have more, attractive, useful Catholic Bible apps.

I too was disappointed in the Catholic options for a daily Bible reading plan. I decided to create my own and was willing to copy and paste the readings but was denied permission to use the NABRE. There are versions of the Catholic Bible online, but they are not indexed so I couldn’t create a link to several readings on one page.

I finally used a protestant bible site (biblegateway) but thankfully, they do offer several options with all of the books of the Catholic Bible.

It’s not ideal, but it may be something you can use.

I use Truth and Life, EWTN sells it too. I also have Verbum.com Don’t get sucked in by the packages. Just download the app and pick the bibles you want. Most of them are $10. I also have the collegville commentary and Haydock. You can dual screen bibles and put them in sync or the commentaries. It will also sync your PC.

Ignatius Press / Lighthouse Catholic Media - includes the entire RSV-CE (Catholic) Second Edition Bible with Daily Mass Readings and “Related Content” (resources related to the current Bible position). As someone else noted, you can purchase the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible-New Testament or New Testament Audio Package for $19.99 each, or both for $29.99. The Related Content are supplement audio sessions that range from $1.99-2.99 each.
2. Laudate - includes MANY Catholic items including New American Bible RE (NABRE - links to usccb.org site), Douay Rheims Bible, Daily Readings & Saint of the Day, Liturgy of Hours, Roman Missal Changes, Order of the Mass, Calendar, Daily Prayer, Rosary and Chaplet, Stations of The Cross, Prayers, Latin Prayers, Confession, Catechism, Catholic Media, EWTN, and Vatican Documents.
3. Catholic Bible by Just1Word Inc. - It comes with the Douay Rheims Bible, and there are several other bibles available for download/purchase, including ASV, AMP (Amplified), CEV (Comtemporary English Bible), ESV, GNT (Good News Translation), GNTCE (Good News Catholic Edition), HCSB (Holman), KJV (King James), NABRE (New American Bible Revised Edition), NASB (New American Standard Bible), NCV, NIRV (New International Readers Bible), NIVUK (NIV Anglicised), NIV (New International Version), NKJV (New King James), NLT (New Living Translation), NRSV (New Revised Standard Version), RSV (Revised Standard Version), RSVCE (RSV Catholic Edition), and MSG (The Message Bible).
