Catholic Bible: Looking for a rare Bible?

I’m looking for a St. Jerome Study Bible for my husband for his birthday. My husband says that this Bible has been out of print for about 15 years. He used to have one & it was his favorite. Its a literal translation in English not Latin. I’ve done a Google search & an amazon search but cant find it? The only this that comes up is the Latin Vulgate. May be some on here knows This Bible by another name. :confused:

I found something on eBay but I don’t think its the right Bible click here to see the site This bible is the Today’s English Version isn’t the TEV a paraphrase translation? (I might be thinking of a different translation) His old Bible was very literal & kind of scholarly. :confused:

I saw the link. I do not think it is the one we are discussing. If I remember it actually says “St. Jerome Study Bible”

Why did they stop printing? THAT is a good question my dear friend, that deserves a good answer. UNfortunatly I don’t have one 😦
 
Although you can really find some gems on eBay, by far the best and most reputable place to purchase second-hand, out-of-print and rare books is AbeBooks.com. Every seller on the site – of which there are thousands – is a professional book dealer, many with vast and astonishing catalogues in specialized fields. Many specialize in Bibles and Biblical studies, theology, philosophy, etc. (Tip: Being impatient with the postal system myself, and finding shipping costs cringe-worthy, I often just track down the titles I want for my collection from sellers in and around my city, arranging to meet-up in person for the exchange. Most sellers on Abe are quite willing to do this.)

The only “St Jerome Study Bible” I remember was the TEV edition of about 20 years ago. I saw red when I picked it up in the mall bookstore. What a brazen and contemptible attempt at appropriating the good name of our beloved St Jerome for such a piece of schlock! “St Jerome”, indeed! Only those English versions translated from the Clementine Vulgate, such as the Douay-Rheims, merit this designation. :mad:

You wouldn’t by any chance be thinking of “The (New) Jerome Biblical Commentary”, would you?

That is what I am thinking of is the Jerome Biblical Commentary not the New Jerome Biblical Commentary

I’m not so sure EITHER of the so-called “Jerome” biblical commentaries are worthy of the name.

A great work, long out of print AND quite expensive if you can even find it, is the 1953 edition of “A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture” by Dom Bernard Orchard. It is based on the Douay-Rheims, I believe.

Dont worry I’m not going to get him the TEV its not the one he used to use. His was a different translation. I’m still going to see if I can find one like he used to have. Thanks for the links.
