I’m not so sure EITHER of the so-called “Jerome” biblical commentaries are worthy of the name.

A great work, long out of print AND quite expensive if you can even find it, is the 1953 edition of “A Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture” by Dom Bernard Orchard. It is based on the Douay-Rheims, I believe.

as for the Jerome…the older one is better in some regards…and especially with the new one…one must take into account that each article is of varying worth…dependin on the author…and bearing in mind Pope Benedict XVI caution about the misuse of the historical critical method…which was in its hayday when this work was produced…

it is not that the hist. crit. method is not useful…but some do not use it properly…
and one needs to be aware of this…in reading any work of this sort…

My point is they aren’t particularly rare, as in there are always copies for sale and I don’t think one who really is willing to work at it would have to spend all that much to get a copy. Maybe it would take awhile. The reason the $70 one isn’t listed is someone bought it.

In any case, I almost hate to do it but I spent another few minutes searching and powells.com/biblio/1111197911?&PID=338#product_details appears to be a copy for $12.95 plus shipping for a total of about $17.00. Of course one should make sure that is the one he wants by checking things like ISBN numbers and such.

Again not what I would call expensive. And that one will likely be gone rapidly too.

addall.com (my favorite for looking for OP books) finds a couple of copies of something called the Catholic Study Bible St. Jerome Edition, published by Catholic Bible Press 1985 (they also found the Holy Bible, the Catholic Study Bible, St. Jerome Edition, from Thomas Nelson - that would be the TEV in the burgandy color previously discussed).

There is just one copy of the Catholic Press volume on addall, for $42 (there are four listings but double-checking reveals that they are volume, duplicate listings for the same volume, addall checks multiple sites and so the listings on Amazon, alibris and abe show up as separate listings).
