In your opinion if a book was part of the table of contents of a bible, ipso facto it’s canonical (by canonical I mean believed to be inspired)? I think you know better than that and I offered the KJV to prove this point wrong. Various fathers rejected the canonical status of the apocrypha but yet felt they could be read for the efication of believers.Calvinator, you clearly do not understand how dogma is defined, and how belief is dealt with within the Church. How many posts have there been where we have tried to explain this to you? How many do you ignore?
You have yet to deal with the evidence we have offered—that the canon was established long before Trent, and indeed was in common enough usage that all the Bibles authorized had them.
Heck, even the gloss included the apocrypha but clearly rejected them as canoncial.
I’m not sure what you mean by “don’t Protestants make a stink about the fact that the Catholic Church denounced false translations pre-Trent?”Moreover, don’t Protestants make a stink about the fact that the Catholic Church denounced false translations pre-Trent? Is not agreement on a canon a prerequisite?
Anyway, your premise is completely untenable. You and I don’t agree on the canon but yet we don’t believe L Ron Hubbard Scientology texts are canonical so no, clearly agreement on a canon is not a prerequisite for denouncing certain texts as false.
How many times do I have to correct you about not putting words in my mouth? You drag out poor Bede and others to claim that they somehow are evidence that Calvin, Luther, and every other would-be Pope heretic had the authority to butcher the Bible as they pleased. That’s great, because you have NO authority in the matter either.
Please find any post of mine in this thread where I even commented on the above. You are just making things up now for the sake of argument.
Wow. You can’t argue against what I post. You put words in my mouth, and now you post something like the above. So much for someone who claims to love the Bible.
My, my, my, how charitable of you Teflon. You do this and then at the end of your post you wax on about how you will pray for me.
Well, save your prayers 'cuz if you are an example of the warmth of the catholic laity, it will be a cold day in you know where before I ever step foot in a catholic church.
Red herring. Now kindly tell me why the Jefferson Bible is invalid, why the Bowdlerized Bibles of the Victorian Era are invalid, and why the Jesus Seminar/Discovery Channel folks who will yet again “discover” another false Gospel just in time for Easter can’t have The Gospel of Ringo in their Bible either.
Pop over to the KJV-only thread while you’re at it and defend the loonies who believe the King James Version was dictated by God.
Maybe I missed it, but you haven’t really responded to anything I posted…pretty much ignored everything I have had to say. That’s the company you’re keeping, and your completely bogus arguments, when applied to your fellow Protestants and even Mormons, will leave you stammering.
BTW, you are pegging out the charity meter here. Good job.
Again with the charity. Why the attacks on me? So far you have mocked my love for scripture, called my arguments bogus, and called me a heretic, and I feel quite certain that I probably missed something. So let’s simplify this considerably:
The Catholic Church determined the 73 books of the Bible in the 4th century. We validated the same 73 in the 16th century, when you lot suddenly discovered a new love for Jewish tradition when it eliminated purgatory from Scripture and thus suited your particular heretical strain.
Would you do this if I were sitting across from you at a table? I think not. Why do it over the internet.
Yet another case of you putting words in my mouth. And, since you now claim unanimity in the Church is required, you can kindly explain why Calvin, whom few Calvinists today agree with completely, matters at all.
Teflon,As for me, I will simply pray that at some point you actually listen to Catholics when we speak of how doctrine and dogma get defined in our Church, which has got to be more comforting to you than the utter anarchy of your own.
Save your prayers. If you are an example of a catholic lay person, and from this forum I would say you are pretty typical, I can guarantee you **I will never set foot in a catholic church **for as long as I live.
