I love the St. Ignatius study bible but I also love the Navarre Bible…great commentaries from the homilies and letters of the Early Church Fathers and from other Doctors of the Church.

The Navarre Bible is particularly impressive in the multiple volume hardcover set. I recently perused the NB Letters of Saint Paul during an Opus Dei retreat and was overwhelmed.

Good recommendation, Dave.

Another vote for the Navarre. Its comments and notes, incidentally, are refreshing and more “pastoral” in content and tone. Rather than going into linguistics and deep exegism, it pulls out points from Scripture above the notes to help in the daily struggle toward holiness. And the notes also include a bit more of a cross section of how the Church has interpreted the texts, with great notes from the saints on the respective passages.

It definitely is not for hair splitting exercises over the meaning of the word “awe” or whatever. But if you’re looking for a Bible to help your prayer life or to boost you in the holy struggle, it’s a great one.
