When Bishop Barron calls what you did ridiculous, you know you goofed. So here is a test. After this correction, will AOC retract what she said?

What happens when a bunch of us laugh at her and say, “Awe heck no!”?

Father Damien did this incredible, brave, outstanding thing, laying down his life in service, for people who are not his ‘tribe’. AOC wants to play the race card? On that guy? That’s hysterical.

God is so generous to allow the wheat and the weeds to grow up together. He will gather the wheat into his barn at harvest, and the weeds will go into the fire. This is a time of decision, isn’t it? A big chasm is opening right in front of us.

Perhaps you might peruse a history of the Belgians in the Congo?
That might have just been King Leopold who ruled over the Congo for 20 out of the 70 year colonization where Belgium had some involvement.
Colonial rule in the Congo began in the late 19th century. King Leopold II of Belgiumattempted to persuade the Belgian government to support colonial expansion around the then-largely unexploited Congo Basin. Their ambivalence resulted in Leopold’s establishing a colony himself. With support from a number of Western countries, Leopold achieved international recognition for a personal colony, the Congo Free State, in 1885.[6] By the turn of the century, the violence used by Free State officials against indigenous Congolese and a ruthless system of economic exploitation led to intense diplomatic pressure on Belgium to take official control of the country, which it did by creating the Belgian Congo in 1908.[7]

So, not only did Father Damien live elsewhere before King Leopold established his savage reign, Father Damien surely, may never have been to Africa.

First off, does she not have Spanish heritage? They settled Puerto Rico and those other places. A lot of the USA. Conquistadors.

And it’s off-topic to say I suppose but she’s a big abortion fanatic, that’s unacceptable to me.

Abortion in the US is actually so racist. I wonder what she’d say about the demographics? Fully made possible by her party. It’s time to confront these people on this. Margaret Sanger and all of that.

She’s on record calling abortion law something like “crazy”.

Fr Damien sounds like a pretty awesome servant of God to me. To focus on his whiteness as being problematic seems so superficial of anyone to do that sort of thing.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes more sense. I’m glad she has received correction and I find her statement that you quoted acceptable. Fr. Damien was one of the saints whose story, as a teenager reading around the church, moved me to faith in the religion of Catholic saints. In fact, it’s been a while since I prayed to him and my life has been really dark lately, I’ll use this as an opportunity to seek his intercession.

Yes indeed, and will communism be far behind? I actually like AOC’s personality. Too bad her politics are so abysmal. And doubly too bad that so many people will overlook her politics for her vibrant and clever personality.

The criticism was of the use of a statue of someone who was not Hawai’ian to represent Hawai’i.
Indeed, it was.

There is a serious reading comprehension and critical thinking problem in this country.

That’s a distinction without a difference at this point. The statues of Columbus, generals, Serra et al that have been torn down? Those weren’t just about the statues, those were about the men the statues represented. And so it was with Fr. Damien and AOC. She is a firebrand who adopts extreme positions as exercises in attempts at power knowing that the current political and social climate makes her essentially unassailable. As if there weren’t enough actual examples of “white male supremacy” she could have cited - no, she chooses her targets for the greatest potential to elevate her visibility and her “brand.” So she knows better than the people of Hawaii who chose Damien to represent their state. Remember, she burst onto the scene saying “Let’s close down the airline industry, and while we’re at it, let’s ban cows.” It’s about attention, and about her.

A comment which is only vaguely related to my response which was about Belgians in a colonial context.

After getting something so wrong, its hard to take future criticism seriously.

The criticism was of the use of a statue of someone who was not Hawaiian to represent Hawaii.
On the other hand, the question of when one becomes (and how one becomes) Hawaiian enough to represent Hawaii comes to mind.
Father Damian was not born in Hawaii; it became his adopted country, when he was sent there as a missionary, and he was ordained at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1859.
Evidently, Hawaiians thought that he represented the best of what they had to offer when, in 1969, they chose to have a statue of him placed in the National Statuary Hall Collection; it was installed in 1969.

99% agreement, except for the bit about culture, there are definitely objectively worse and better cultures.
