Catholic Bookstores in the Age of Amazon

I work in downtown DC and am only a few blocks from the “Catholic Information Center”…In addition to having a wonderful selection of books, inside they also have a chapel that offers daily Mass and Adoration, and the priests hear confessions every day.

Sometimes I get fed up with living/working in this area, but that’s definitely a bright spot!

It is the most beautiful, most humbling place. Exquisite.
The history of the construction, and the choice of the various elements there are incredible. When I was at the Catholic school I took the 8th grade class at the end of the school year every year. They were awestruck each time. It was a 2.5 hour drive from our school in Georgia. But the new principal after 8 consecutive years, decided it was too much liability and too expensive to rent a bus to go. Sad.

You are very blessed to be so near to the place. I get a taste of the beauty that is there from TV - I can only imagine what it’s like in person.
That is sad for the students. What a tremendous opportunity for them to visit there.

Amazon has not started trading in Australia yet.
The book shop is on the way out here, just like dvd shops.
My Diocese has a resource learning centre, a library. Books, music and Dvds are free to borrow.

Apart from that, everyone seems to buy from The Book Depository, based in UK.

I’m blessed to have a Catholic bookstore in my diocese. It’s just down the street from our cathedral. It’s in an old building with a basement and a loft area. Aside from a seriously wonderful collection of books, they sell church furnishings and clerical wear. One of their big items they carry year round are nativity sets. If you want to add to your Fontanini in July, they’ve got it! While it is a Catholic bookstore, they do serve some protestant denominations insofar as furnishings. They also carry Mystic Monk coffee.

That being said, Amazon is a bit of an adversary to the bookstore. The proprietor, Julie Cragon, is a published author and all of her books are carried on Amazon and some are in Kindle format. I’ll admit that I’ve ordered some catholic books on Amazon only because I can do it at 11 pm but not hers!

I order from Amazon also for various reasons – but I try to make sure I’m supporting Catholic shops also, either directly on-line or in-person visit and buy something there when I can. If they had Mystic Monk coffee I would go all the time.

… reminds me that I’ve been looking for an outdoor nativity set but those are hard to find, at the right price for me, that is.

Sometimes they have some plans for nice silhouette sets if you’re crafty and handy with tools.

I guess, generations ago families could get nice outdoor sets with wooden statues for a reasonable price, or something - because I see them in antique shops going for a lot of $$$$ now. Maybe there was a bigger demand - I don’t know.
But yes - I don’t like those plastic ones with the ugly faces and they look like balloon characters, next to the same Santa Claus and Frost the Snowman - it’s not reverent.

I agree, they’re just tacky. And Our Lady always blows away or falls over.
Around here, kids steal the baby Jesus out of yards as pranks.
