Hi, not sure where to post this so I ask the moderators to redirect this post if needed. Thank you.

A Catholic friend of the family recently passed away. We were waiting to find out about when the funeral would be and didn’t see anything in the obits. So we called the daughter ( the one who is handling things) and she said that there would be no funeral or burial. She had her cremated and in a month or so there will be a memorial service at a church. The remains will be scattered in hawaii. There was never anything in the obits to let friends pay their respects. I know that the deceased would have wanted a proper catholic funeral but she really didn’t make anything clear in writing and so her daughter seems to be haphazardly whipping something together and it all doesn’t seem right.

My question is… Is this arrangement ok for a catholic? Is this arrangement licit for a catholic? Is there anything immoral here? Tia

Creamated remains are NOT allowed to be scattered. They are to be kept in an Urn.

But if the next-of-kin is not Catholic (or a lapsed Catholic) and the Catholic who died didn’t leave written instructions, there’s not much one can do.

Because our children left the Church, both my husband & I have written instructions about our desire for a funeral Mass & burial. Tho we are going to be cremated. Hopefully, the kids will follow our wishes.

…and buried properly.
Yes. Cremains must be interred.
Proper care and handling of ones remains is a must.
Regardless of whether one is religiously inclined or not.
I’m so sorry this has happened to your friend.

Our sincerest condolences in your loss.

Thank you all for your responses. I wonder if I should say something to her daughter about this. I really dont know how to approach it, it’s such a difficult topic. I dont think the daughter knows any better and I’m guessing there are money issues as well.

I dont know what to do. 😊

What would you do?

I would find out where she (the deceased) worshipped and speak to her pastor.

You could arrange to have a Mass said for the repose of your friend’s soul.
