Catholic call going unanswered

BUFFALO — In 1970, more than 1,200 Catholic priests served the parishes and missions of the Diocese of Buffalo.
Today, fewer than half that number are in service, and that includes missionaries serving overseas as well as sick and retired priests.

Father Leon Biernat’s job is to find and help men discern whether they are being called by God to diocesan priesthood.

He’s a busy, busy man.

The Catholic call is going unanswered because of the sex scandal and open opposition to Church teaching among clergy and laity today.

A young man may go to a fairly “orthodox” parish and feel called to the priesthood. Often, contact with another parish, or perhaps a seminary where orthodoxy and reverence is frowned upon and ridiculed will turn him away from answering God’s call. Hopefully, it won’t turn him away from the Church all together. Often, it does.
