**I think these people are Catholic, however not sure if they are practicing anymore:

Regis Philbin (from ‘Live w/ Regis and Kelly’)
**
Yes, Regis is, and from what my wife says, so is Kelly. Both of them talk about going to church on Sunday quite frequently. Kelly usually has stories about what her kids did in church that week. Don’t know that she ever refers to it as Mass, but definitely, she talks about going to church with her family.

So what difference does that make? After all., ALL scripture is the Word of God, right?

Besides, admonishing the sinner is one of the spiritual works of mercy.

Additionally, if you read the context of the whole “let him who is without sin cast the first stone”, it was in the context of a public execution. No one here is talking about taking the fornicating bums outside the city walls and executing them, just “calling them out”, so to speak. After all, as someone pointed out, the general public needs to be set straight so as not to think the Catholic Church approves such public sinning. That is called avoiding scandal, and Jesus had some harsh words about that, too.
Well, you think what you’d like, but Jesus was all about forgiveness. And yes, the bible IS the word of God, but I think there’s a greater significance in a direct quote of Jesus’ than that of an account told by someone else. Plus, the meaning of that quote can and does appy to today’s situations. I don’t think anyone here is saying the church might appear to “excuse” that behavior just because celebrities do it. Anyone who knows a Catholic knows that that’s not true. All I’m saying is, we are not there living with those people day in and day out. We have no idea what their personal relationship with Jesus and/or the church is. Therefore, to say that they are not “practicing Caholics”, just because of how we THINK they live their lives is based on nothing concrete. Unless we know any of these people personally, how can we really know for sure what kind of Caholics they are? If they say they are Catholics and go to mass regularly, who am I to say no they are not? You can interpret any way you wish, but that’s my belief system and I’m sticking to it. I was taught at a very young age that Jesus died on the cross for ALL of us and ALL of our sins, and yes, that does include celebrities. LOL! I don’t think I can make my point any clearer than that. 🙂

  1. In case you’ve forgotten your basic sacramental theology, contrition is necessary to have your sins forgiven.
  2. It’s not about how we THINK they are living their lives; they are openly flaunting their sinfulness in public! It’s right in front of our faces! Just like the guy that Paul referred to in Corinthians. We’d either have to have our heads stuck in the sand or sparred too much without headgear not to see it! As Jesus also said “By their fruits you shall know them” - apply that to these fornicators - what fruits are they producing? How is such sinning and rubbing it in th eface of the public a sign of contrition? Wake up!

How do you know they are not “contrite”? Plus, I don’t think what you do in the privacy of your own home is anybody’s business. It’s not “flaunting”, at least I don’t feel it is. Now if they released video tapes of them having sex on the internet, then I would consider that “flaunting” their sins. LOL! Geesh.

Hello? They’re publicly living in sin! (At least I wear headgear when I spar at the gym…)

Like the guy in 1 Cor. 5 that was shacking up with his stepmother?
I still say it’s not for any of us but the Lord to decide. But hey, you’re obviously not going to be convinced otherwise, but then again, neither am I. LOL. Guess we’re at an impass. 🤷

I’m sorry that you are ignoring the scripture and traditional Catholic beliefs I’ve posted.

While you’re at it, would you be willing to list Hitler and Mussolini as Catholic celebrities?

Now, you’re just being obtuse.
How so? I’m just holding you to your own standards. If you maintain that it’s not up to us to judge, then why don’t you list Hitler and Mussolini as Catholic celebrities?

Mike Piazza:thumbsup:

Billy Donovan and Urban Meyer both are. GO GATORS:thumbsup:

Please, you want to compare my listing Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel and Stacy Ferguson (Fergie) as “practicing Catholics” who are also celebrities to Adolph Hitler and Benito Musslini??? As far as I know, Mark, Josh and Stacy haven’t “murdered” countless numbers of people. There is a HUGE difference! Besides, I wouldn’t catagorize Hitler and Mussolini as “celebrities”. Infamous, yes. Celebrities? I don’t think so! LOL!

Wait a second, YOU are the one crying how it’s not for us to judge, so what’s good for the fornicating bums is good for the murderers - mortal sin is mortal sin, and hell is hot no matter who you sleep with or kill to get there.

At least be consistent.

So, is this thread supposed to be about NAMING Celebrities and sports figures, or arguing?

Both of you need to quit. No, I’m not a moderator, but you have trashed this thread!

Well, YOU’RE free to believe what you want, but I don’t believe that. I don’t believe that Jesus will judge people who live together as harshly as serial killers/mass murderers, especially if they never ask for forgiveness. You sound very “Old Testament” to me. Things changed dramatically when Jesus came along. But that’s MY perception of the “New Testament”. BTW, sometimes I miss mass on Sunday. I guess that means I’m going to burn in hell with Hitler and Mussolini, right? 🤷

My point exactly! It was the other poster who started on me. I was merely naming celebs whom I knew to be “praticing Catholics”. But, I’m not going to stand by and let someone run down my beliefs as a Catholic. I’m through with this thread anyway.

Since you don’t want to let this drop, I must publicly correct some of the theological errors that you are polluting the internet with:

Somewmay speculate that there are different circles of hell, but it is still hell.

If your perception of the NT is that the 10 commandments were abolished, you are in serious theological error.
BTW, sometimes I miss mass on Sunday. I guess that means I’m going to burn in hell with Hitler and Mussolini, right? 🤷
Well, technically, if you don’t have a compelling reason to miss mass like a “life or death” situation of caring for an infant, it is a mortal sin to “blow off” mass on a Sunday or holy day of obligation…
My point exactly! It was the other poster who started on me. I was merely naming celebs whom I knew to be “praticing Catholics”.
But all we are saying is that they are not practicing! How can they be practicing if they are shacking up in public? At least I’ve seen other posters state the disclaimer “but I don’t know if they’re still practicing”.

I understand that everyone has their sins and everyone needs to repent, but there is a difference between someone who is struggling and trying and one who publicly flaunts it. Remember what Jesus said about “If you were blind there would be no sin in that, but ‘We see’ you say, and your sin remains”. And public shame could be one tool that is used to bring them back into the fold (just like excommunication).

My apologies if this has gotten off track, but if we are creating public “Catholic celebrity” lists, that can lead to hero worship, and it is important to know who these heros are. I mean, is not the ultimate list of “Catholic celebrities and heroes” our list of saints? And is not one of the functions of studying the lives of the saints to imitate their virtue? The same should hold true for the list we are compiling here.

Ha! Yeah, so I clicked to go to the last page of this thread, expecting to find some celebrities I did not know were Catholics, and found myself in the middle of an argument!

Urban Meyer, though, good call! 👍

Apryl, I think the “argument” is very important, actually. There are a lot of “ethnic” Catholics out there who were baptized, might even be registered at a parish, could even go to mass most Sundays. But when push comes to shove, their lives don’t reflect the Gospel.

So, are they Catholic? Well, once baptized, we got you. BUT, are they Catholic AND worthy of being emulated? NO, of course not. And that was the point of this thread - what celebrities have self identified as Catholic, and since they are Catholic they must be worthy of emulation. To let it go at that, and not point out the ones not worthy of emulation, serves no purpose.

And, quite frankly, who cares if Marky Mark says he’s Catholic? It would be more productive (if at all) to list the philanthropists and people making a real contribution to their community who are Catholic.
