Catholic "Celebrity" encounters

My husband just called me from the airport as he was getting off a flight (business trip), and said he saw Raymond Arroyo (from EWTN) sitting at the gate with his family (they had just visited Disney)… and he had a great conversation with him… he said he was a really nice guy!

I thought that was so cool!

Anyone else run into any “Catholic Celebrities” in their daily lives? Could be a fun thread!

When I was a tiny child back in the late 1950s, we lived on Long Island (New York). We frequently saw Perry Como at Sunday Mass at our parish church.

I met Steve Angransino(sp?), a Catholic singer/songwriter, who wrote(I think) ‘Go Make a Difference’, which my mom loves. She was with me at the time, and squealed ‘Steve!’ when she saw him. 😛 He was quite surprized, but we had a nice chat with him. ^^ This was at a Catholic conference of some kind.
 
Well… I don’t know if any of you know him… there is a guy on EWTN’s show that is filmed out of the University of Illinois… His name is Shawn Reeves… he goes to my parish. I have talked to him, his wife and son a few times… I saw him on the Journey home last Saturday night, and surprize… he wasn’t at mass on Sunday… I don’t know how far in advance they film the show, but I know it is about an 11 hour drive to Birmingham AL from here… and that is if you are driving with my son the lead foot 😃
 
I know Gretchen Harris, a Catholic singer with the most beautiful voice. She and her family go to my parish. She’s as beautiful on the inside as the outside.🙂

We have been very lucky to have been able to see them at various conferences that we have been to.
 
How neat EM!

I submitted a book review on a book by Bishop Fulton Sheen to Canticle, and exchanged emails with Johnette Benkovic. She is as ‘celebrity’ from a Catholic perspective that I’ve gotten–nice nice lady! It was neat–The review was also accepted by her in one of her issues a few years ago–so it was kinda neat. I would personally love to meet Fr Groeschel and Fr Corapi…maybe someday.🙂
 
Fr. Groeschel and he was very kind to bless me when I asked him.
 
As a matter of fact we ran into our most wonderful Cardinal Rigali in the Rome airport. He was so gracious and very humble. It was one of the highlights of our trip.
 
I drove Fr. Apostoli to the train station a few years back. Did we have a awesome sprited, spirit-filled conversation? Noooooo. I had been told a time he needed to be at the station and well, lets just say I thought we should have started out 30-45 minutes before we did. I sped the whole way and no doubt he was praying his heart out thinking I was an looney lead-foot for no good reason.

Next time I will verify with my passenger when they really need to be somewhere :rolleyes:. I’m glad I was able to help but, sheesh, I don’t think scaring someone to death is really helping. (No, he didn’t say anything, he was very gracious, but I noted he looked (reeeeally) relieved once we got there.) Yeah.😊

I think all of these pple would be embarrassed to be thought of as celebrities but they sort of are.
 
We volunteered at a conference, and hubby did all the sound and video, so he got backstage to talk to John Michael Talbot, Raymond Arroyo, Leonardo Defillipis, and a few others. I met Fr. Groeschel a few years ago and got his autograph. He just seems to look into your soul with those piercing blue eyes of his. Remarkable man.

And I used to go to Franciscan, so I saw Scott Hahn and his various chillins all the time. In fact, one of my friend’s mother stalked Mr. Hahn during parent weekend and has an entire roll of film of Mr. Hahn doing various things.

LUCKY!!! I love hearing him speak, we have a couple of his talks and have used them with teenagers when teaching CCD.

Never met anyone famous, but I was in Mile High Stadium when Pope JPII came to Denver in 1993. THAT was AWESOME!
 
When I was a novice in a monastery in Colorado, Cardinal (then Archbishop) Stafford brought Mother Teresa and two of her Sisters to our monastery for dinner.

She and the Sisters prayed Compline in our makeshift chapel (our regular chapel was undergoing renovation) and was in the chair right in front of mine. I was totally fixated on her sandaled feet – the work they’d done bringing the radical Love of God to so many places on this earth.

We had a house full of retreatants (40) that weekend and couldn’t tell them Mother was coming, for security reasons. They were stunned when they saw her at Compline.

That’s a wonderful memory. Thanks for the thread.

I am closely acquainted with Fr. Robert Levis from EWTN’s Web of Faith program. He’s a wonderful, gentle, and inspiring man. I have also briefly met Fr. John Trijilio who is on Web of Faith with him and is the author of Catholicism for Dummies, among other writings.
 
Last year I went to see Dawn Eden speak and was able to meet her and get her to autograph her book “The Thrill of the Chaste” for me. That was very cool as she is a woman I admire a great deal.

About 6 years ago I met the ultimate Catholic celebrity - Pope John Paul II ! That was the most amazing moment in my life!
 
I met and spoke with Tim Staples when he came down to speak at our parish! 👍
 
I see Jesus at Mass all the time…👍

On a more terrestrial note, I was a press escort for Pope John Paul’s papal visit to Canada in 1984, met some really cool reporters from Catholic news agencies, many of whom were religious. And I got to be up fairly near the altar at the mass Mass 🙂 down by Quidi Vidi Lake.
