This
article from EWTN gives a fair overview of the movement.
But it is a general view, and discernment is best done on a case by case basis. I had read about 10 years ago (sorry I can’t remember the title of the document) that even some of the legitimate charismatic prayer groups sometimes need to be purified of certain * distortions*.
I gave it a try one year. Our parish, for a number of years had held the “Life in the Spirit Seminars” - which I found to be quite edifying by themselves, but when we moved into the praying over people and “praying in tongues” on the final meeting , it was as if suddenly everyone had forgotten how to speak english ( I might even venture to say, “forgotten how to speak at all”) . At the end of that “prayer meeting”, a dear friend of mine (an elderly lady) who had been instrumental in getting me to attend, whispered to me shaking her head, “There is far too much emphasis on ‘praying in tongues’ here” . I was inclined to agree. But I can only speak from that personal experience and about that particular group in our parish…better to discern each case separately. On a more positive note, I also know of several people who have been healed of their infirmnities at healing Masses.
As far as speaking in tongues, particularly an “angelic language that only God knows” , it would be better if an interpreter were present. St. Paul’s instruction in 1 Corinthians 14 ] clearly warns us of seeking the gifts of the Giver rather than the Giver of gifts, and of the non edificatory potential of speech which is neither intelligible nor interpretable at these gatherings. The entire Chapter 14 of 1 Corinthians is a pertinent read. Here’s an excerpt:
**1 Corinthians 14: 6-19 ** [NAB]
Now, brothers, if I should come to you speaking in tongues, what good will I do you if I do not speak to you by way of revelation, or knowledge, or prophecy, or instruction?
Likewise, if inanimate things that produce sound, such as flute or harp, do not give out the tones distinctly, how will what is being played on flute or harp be recognized?
And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?
Similarly, if you, because of speaking in tongues, do not utter intelligible speech, how will anyone know what is being said? For you will be talking to the air.
It happens that there are many different languages in the world, and none is meaningless;
but if I do not know the meaning of a language, I shall be a foreigner to one who speaks it, and one who speaks it a foreigner to me.
So with yourselves: since you strive eagerly for spirits, seek to have an abundance of them for building up the church.
Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray to be able to interpret.
(For) if I pray in a tongue, my spirit is at prayer but my mind is unproductive.
So what is to be done? I will pray with the spirit, but I will also pray with the mind. I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will also sing praise with the mind.
Otherwise, if you pronounce a blessing (with) the spirit, how shall one who holds the place of the uninstructed say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
For you may be giving thanks very well, but the other is not built up.
I give thanks to God that I speak in tongues more than any of you,
but in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
