The Buffalo branch of Catholic Charities is getting rid of its adoption and foster care division after 95 years because it was approached by one gay couple.

On its website, the group announced it is doing away with the program because it is still under contract with Erie County and the state.

New York regulations ban discrimination against same-sex couples looking to foster or adopt kids. Catholic Charities said it can no longer meet that requirement because it goes against the teachings and position of the church.

So why do this in 2018 when the church has never recognized gay marriage?

"We were in an incontrovertible controversy between what the state is expecting that we would be without prejudice, foster and adopt with couples that are same-sex and the Catholic Church teaching that this is not a marital couple and that a child is better served to be with a man and a woman who are married,” said Sister Mary McCarrick, Catholic Charities Diocesan Director.

This is heartbreaking.

It’s sad that they have to close, but I applaud them for doing what is necessary and not caving to the state. One cannot do evil to accomplish good.

I agree to an extent but we need someone to stand up to this stuff, don’t we? It’s a tough situation, but someone has to. My irl friends always like to say “this isn’t the hill to die on.” But there is a hill we die on. Funny how that always isn’t the hill we’re on…

The world is so hostile to Catholic beliefs anymore that I truly think the Church should just dump everything that’s not directly ecclesiastical. Get rid of charities, hospitals, schools, adoptions agencies, leper colonies, etc. Get rid of everything and go back to just doing Church. Let all the heathens go back to killing and eating each other. Time to circle the wagons. 😡

Yet charities, hospitals, schools, adoption agencies, leper colonies, etc. are obvious outgrowths of Christian beliefs. It’s antiChristian to “let the heathens go back to killing and eating each other.” We’re not a “circle the wagons” people. We’re an evangelizing people.

“One must go into the world to carry the Divine Life into it.”
– St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)

Evangelization has it’s limits. Even our Lord admitted such.

"If anyone will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that place, as a testimony against them.”

If Catholic charitable efforts are met with non-stop hostility and disdain, I say the Church has every right to “shake the dust off their feet” and stop ministering to the hostiles and leave them to their fate. It is apparently what “the world” wants. You don’t want Christianity anymore? Fine, you don’t have to have it. Sayonara.
