Look at this news story from the Washington Times.
Virginia law eyed in girl’s abortion
Bishops alerted to U.S. probe
Federal authorities are investigating the actions of a Catholic charity in Richmond which helped a 16-year-old Guatemalan girl to receive an abortion in January, in possible violation of Virginia law.
Officials have called the matter to the attention of U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) headquarters in Washington, urging it to prevent any repetition of the incident.
Four employees of Commonwealth Catholic Charities, Richmond, (CCR) have been fired and one supervisor with the bishops’ Migration and Refugee Services agency has been suspended, according to federal sources and a secret April 29 letter written by three bishops to 350 bishops nationwide.
Full story here.

In Virginia, parental consent is required for an underage girl to get an abortion. The parents were “missing” and, therefore, did not consent. Social workers signed the consent form instead.

This same charity had earlier “fitted” this same girl with a contraceptive device.

IMO, anyone employed in any capacity w/ an agency w/ the word “Catholic” in it should have to sign a statement declaring that they agree and abide by ALL Church teaching. Someone following Church teaching would not help anyone get an abortion or contraceptives (or even encourage premarital sex!).

The gov’t is actually lucky this happened at a Catholic agency. If it was Planned parenthood or a public school they’d cite the girl’s “privacy” and “reproductive rights” and wouldn’t cooperate.

In Christ,

Ellen

I am relieved that several bishops condemned the action of the employees very strongly. I am also relieved that the people were fired.

I also hope that someone points out to them that they excommunicated themselves.

This is so tragic. This poor girl duped into having this done will carry this with her all her life. The scar made all the deeper because of her age and her missing parents.

There is great evil afoot. Where is the bishop? The rot in Catholic Charities in Richmond appears to be deep and longstanding.

It’s diffficult for me to believe that a Catholic charity would actually help a girl have an abortion – what were they thinking??? They helped a young girl “kill” her baby – I will pray for the young girl. Hasn’t this Catholic charity heard of adoption??? I have 3 adopted children in my family and am so happy that they young children found wonderful parents and the parents found fabulous children.

I feel the same way. It is disgusting that this happened through a Catholic charity but I am glad that action has been taken.

Commonwealth Catholic Charities employs people and people can be very bad sometimes. This is one of those times. What they did does not define Catholicism. It does define humanity, however…:hmmm: How sad…teachccd 😦

This is why from every single pulpit without exception chastity should be preached…
The reason for these big problems in the lives of Catholics is because young people are not educated about sex and what sex means and how they should respect themselves.

The big topic among all my female coworkers the other day was the gossip magazine story of a 17-year old argentinian girl who had 7 children… by three different men. two times she had had three… … Now she had all these children and no man … no husband… and just waited to get used again.
Here she would have gotten an abortion and all 7 would have been dead.

But what is the answer here: teaching young women and men about the beauty and repsonsibility of sex in a healthy and life-giving marriage.
Where I am the Church is no where near preahing the truth about these things… even catholic schools indirectly urge promiscuity… its really sad.

We live in a world where condoms have been allowed to be viewed as salvation… because condom effectivity has spoken louder than the words of Christian leaders.

abortion is only the end of a line of tragedies in a girl’s life.

I still see only part of the story here. Much of the rest is behind privacy laws. It mentioned she had one child already and was fitted with a contraceptive device. It does not say why it was placed on.

What we need to do is to hold back as we do not have the complete story and jumping to conclusions only distorts what probably happened. Let’s not pre-judge here.

Are you saying that you do not know the purpose of a contraceptive device? It is a tool with a unique function and that why it is used.

I am not at all surprised. When our very chanceries and religious orders have a lot of people who do not follow Church teaching, often openly defying it, why would anyone expect organizations having “Catholic” in their name, and drawing public as well as Church funds, to be different?

I am glad to see the Vatican starting to appoint new bishops who actually follow the Church’s magisterium. There is a lot of house cleaning to do, and organizations like this are far down on the pole.

I hate to say it, but when it comes to a lot of “Catholic” organizations, I think we’re going to have to start again from scratch.

A Person was killed, a young woman has been scarred for life, 4 employees have been fired and several bishops denounced what happened and a federal investigation is underway and you say “Let’s not pre-judge”?

You really have separated yourself from the Church.
