I’m not an expert on Sacred Scripture. I am a practicing Roman Catholic and volunteer catechist. I recently became aware of some of our Catholic children reading The Picture Bible by the David C. Cook publishing company. When I was reading through it, it just didn’t “feel right” to me. The pages have illustrations of bible stories and is most colorful, all of which make this an easy read to both children and adults. It looks like a comic book. I don’t now why, but it does make me feel uneasy or not sure IF I’m making too much of it. If anyone can share with me your experience with this or a similar circumstance and also your thoughts or recommendations would be most appreciated. May God Bless you!

Is this the book you mean?

My dad has this book when he was younger, and I read it growing up. I think it’s great…the author did a great job of telling the stories faithfully and making them sweet and engaging for kids to read. Since it’s a comic-style book, of course it is different than reading the real Bible. But I’m not sure why it bothered you. I haven’t seen it in years, so I don’t know if it has any anti-Catholic bias in it. But I would be surprised if it did. Actually, I appreciate the reminder about it. I might purchase it for my sons who really like comic books and graphic Bibles.

Thank you so much for your response! I appreciate your time. I’m happy for you that you have good memories about reading it growing up, and your dad, too! Thanks for sharing and all the best to you and your sons and may they grow in their faith and love for Jesus and that God loves them unconditionally!

We’ve got one, no big deal.

The church actually gave one away as a drawing prize last fall.

For books like this, I usually look for any anti-Catholic or non-Catholic teaching, especially surrounding the Last Supper. If they misinterpret or downplay that, then I don’t share it with children.
