Catholic=Christian. My bookstore experience

I don’t think the Christianness or lack thereof of Catholics is really relevant. I think it’s perfectly reasonable that a Protestant bookseller with theological objections to Catholic teachings (and who may or may not consider these objections strong enough to deny Catholics the title “Christian”) would chose not to carry Catholic materials.
I think the point though is that Christian means Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox. Protestants are not the only christians out there. You are right that it is there right to stock what they will, but its pretty narrow to call it a christian bookstore and you only allow certain christians

Maybe I’m just a troublemaker or way too easily amused, but I enjoy going into Christian Book/Gift stores and inquiring sweetly whether they have any statues of the Virgin Mary.
:rotfl:

I have to take note of this, who knows one day when I feel rather wicked … .😉

Any Christian bookstore can just sidestep the whole problem by having a section labeled “Comparative Religions.” Still carries materials that are questionable according to their POV, but without labeling them so. Everyone is happy.

Would you rather have them be called “Protestant bookstores”? That sounds awfully decisive to me.

No, but calling it a Christian bookstore without including ALL Christians, especially the oldest ones, is hypocritical and ignorant.

Sadly though Christian doesn’t mean the same thing to us as Catholics as it does to everyone else. Anymore, Christian to those who say they are “Christian” means evangelical protestant, though they don’t like to use the term protestant anymore.

I know of a Catholic bookstore that does a pretty brisk business selling St Joseph statues to Protestants to bury in their yard when trying to sell their home.

After visiting some Evangelical bookstores, we found a Catholic bookstore which has religious get well, sympathy, Christmas Cards and others. I like looking through the books on theology. The bookstore even has books on Lutheranism from the LC-MS’ Concordia Publishing House. This is the bookstore that I bought a crucifix for our new house when we move to California.

Last time I was in Family Bookstores (Zondervon) I picked a beautiful Crucifix.
😉

I don’t think you should put words into people’s mouth. I grew up Protestant and I thought my Catholic family members were Christian. I have some Southern Baptist family members who still consider me a Christian.

Wait, were you in my Catholic bookstore? 😃

We carry KJV Bibles and many non-Catholic Christian books. The only non-Catholic Christian bookstore in our area closed a couple of years ago so we’re pretty much it now.

They actually didn’t carry Bibles. They were only special order items. Blew my mind.

I can’t keep them in stock.

And 80% of them are sold to Protestants. :o

I don’t want to do a dance about it. Most Protestants are doing it because it is a superstition. Not really the thing I want them to pick up from a Catholic Church. 😦

I only carry them because I don’t have a choice.

👍 I imagine the faces you get look something like this:  or this:  I’d love to see that! 🍿

Welcome to the wonderful world of anti-Catholic fundamentalist wackery.
Make sure before leaving you apologize for being Catholic, apologize for the Inquistion, the Crusades, any “martyr” named in Foxe’s book of martyrs, pediphile priests, and any wide-eyed accusation by that renowned Bible scholar and Church historian Jack Chick.
Have I missed anything?
Oh, and make sure you pray the one, two, three sinners prayer this Sunday at the Bible Beater’s Baptist Church so you can go to Heaven with all those fine examples of Christian love.
Oh…and ah…make sure you put somethin’ in collection plate on the way out…preacher needs a new suit.
😃

Written with tongue firmly in cheek, no fundamentalists were killed or injured in the making of this post.
You forgot Gallelio and the million witches burned in the middle ages.

Actually the look goes from pleasant helpfulness to distaste to awkward refusal to make eye contact in less than a second!

Maybe it’s not very nice of me to tease people like that. I should knock it off.

Interesting thread…my thoughts:
  • Horrific business decision. In excluding Catholic material, they exclude a potential market of 1.4B people including Orthodox. I add 200M Orthodox, my sense is that you are being discriminated here too. 😉
  • Not Christian…they do not follow Christ’s example. Taking their mindset, Jesus would not have sat and had dinner with the tax collectors (sinners). I would think their mindset would be to evangelize Catholics by being warm & receptive by carrying some Catholic material.
We have a Christian bookstore in our town and they do have a 6’ wall of Catholic material in the back of the bookstore. Nice people and the selection is not too bad. However, I always feel like I’m being watched (I know it’s not true) as I walk to the back of the store…like people are thinking “hey a Catholic is in here”. Funny how we think.

The bookstore business is tough and it’s nice to support Catholic bookstores including CAF. Ordering on-line or picking up the phone is easy and who can’t wait a few days. It’s actually nice to get a package in the mail. Something about opening something that always make me feel good even when I know what it is. Don’t know why I feel this way.

Pie and I talk once in a while about opening a Catholic bookstore in our town…it would include books, art and coffee. So far it’s only talk…but it’s something that we’d really like to do. The sign on the door would say “Catholic” in someway so as to not confuse anyone. Maybe we should have a Baptist section too…just to see what happens. If I build it, will they come? :coffeeread:
I’d come.🙂

I have been in Christian bookstores that have all kinds of Christian items in stock, & will order things for you…But more recently, the owner of a “christian bookstore” told me that they don’t sell anything but the King James Bible, because all the others were written by Catholics & [get ready for it!] “Jesuit Muslims”.
Of course, he also told me that “the Bible was originally written in English”, & that anyone who reads it in Greek & Hebrew is part of a “cult”.
:rolleyes:First I ever knew that having an education past the second grade is a:rolleyes: “cult” member…

Yeah, I remember some book saying that “all the women in Europe were killed by the Catholics”. (I wonder how the human race kept going after that). :rolleyes:Sheesh.
