Jesus said no one knows when the end of the world will be, my priest and former priest said it could be a loooooooooooong time from now.

Someone on CAF said that the Church teaches the end of the world is “imminent” and Pope Frances seems to think we are in the last days, though like this article says, it could still be a long time.

Does the Church teach the end of the world is imminent or could it be a loooooooooooooong time from now?

And if it’s imminent, why hasnt Jesus returned 1,500 years ago?

The Church does not teach that the end of the world is imminent (in that it will definitely happen in the next few years or decades or whatever). It could be, or it could be a long time from now.

We should prepare as if it were imminent, since none of us knows when.

“Behold! I am coming soon!” Revelation 22:12
“one day is like a thousand years” 2 Peter 3:8

So Gods definition of ‘soon’ is very different from ours, which makes sense if your the immortal creator of the universe.

You could argue that both imminent and a long time are relative terms

Didn’t you just start a thread on a very similar topic not long ago?

I believe on your previous thread, you were told that no one knows the time of the “end of the world” but God, that God’s time is not like our time so “imminent” to Him might well be several thousand years down the road, and that the Church, the Pope, St. Faustina etc did not identify specific times that the world would end.

It is highly likely that our very own “end” as in death will come upon us a lot faster than the world overall will end, so we should be busy getting our own lives in order for when we meet God, regardless of whether that will happen when we die or when we are still living on earth and the world ends.

I would hope you do not sit around worrying about the world ending or dwelling on it. I mention this because I have had at least one friend with anxiety issues who would regularly watch documentaries on the purported end of the world coming (usually this was the sort of dreck aired on cable channels or Youtube) and scare himself into a tizzy fit.

In any event, I’m not sure why you are starting multiple threads of concern on the same topic. The answers you will get on each of them are going to be the same.

The threads are similar but not the same exact question. Now I’m wanting to know if the CHURCH teaches that the end of the world is “imminent” or if she teaches that it could be a looooooooong time from now, and by loooooooooong, even longer than several thousand years from now?

It doesn’t matter if you’re asking about “the Church”, “the Pope”, or “Saint X” (canonized by the Church), or “Jesus” etc.

The Answer Is Exactly The Same.

It’s what Cajun Joy said.

So it COULD even be longer than several thousand years from now?

Yes it could be several thousands years from now, or it could be next year.

That is a classic example of “only God knows. No one else”
Like others have said the Church’s teaching is “Only God knows”

Hope , you are allowing this obsession with the end of the world to take over. This is your third thread now right?

Only God knows when the end will come.

We have been in the last days for 2000 years.
We are now in the third millennium of the Catholic Church.

Get a copy of the Catechism or bookmark an electronic version of an online version and read the section starting around section 675. Also, get a good Catholic study bible such as the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible and read its apologetics sections about the end times as well as the full text and notes on Matthew 24-25, Mark 13, Luke 17 and 21, John 6, 1 and 2 Thessalonians, 2 Peter, Jude, and Revelation. That’s just the New Testament, and just a sampling. You also must be very familiar with at least Daniel and Zechariah from the Old Testament, but there are dozens of more passages even in the OT alluding to the end times. Then there are multiple works of the Saints such as St. Robert Bellarmine and St. Hildegard of Bingen who provide mystical interpretations and prophecies of the end times in accordance with Scripture. The book “The End of the Present World and the Mysteries of Future Life” is a very good overview of the end times as well. Let’s not forget to mention the multiple (approved) private revelation which address the end times. On the one hand, it is simple: the world will end, but we do not know the day nor the hour. On the other hand, there are some signs to watch for yet our interpretation of them is not always perfect. This is an area of study which you must undertake on your own and really immerse yourself in it in order to truly understand it. You will not be satisfied by just reading responses to your posts in this forum. Sorry to be blunt, but you need to invest the time and energy into learning about this subject yourself…

I have been taught that after Christ’s resurrection and ascension, we are living in the end times. These are them! There will be no new Messiah sent by God, and when Christ returns to separate the sheep from the goats, that will be the definitive end time. It will be the second, and last coming. So like the saying goes,
“Jesus is coming, look busy!”
