Are non-religious concerts permitted inside the church building? Is wine permitted to be served to adults before & after the concerts & popsicles during the summer months? Also, can people just walk around, laugh out loud, play an instrument, etc. while in the building during these concerts or be advised to wear their hair in curlers, a robe, floppy slippers, flip-flops, etc.? I feel removing the Blessed Sacrament from the tabernacle into another part of the church is not sufficient & this is the Lord’s House & should be respected? When should it be treated as a theater, karaoke club or cafe?!
 
Some bishops do allow it in their dioceses. So it is permitted at least in some places. Whether or not it is a respectful practice is another question.

I’m fine with some concerts, especially organ concerts or orchestral works. Churches are often the best places acoustically to host such events; and, they are often reverent and dignified. (EDIT: Just make sure the host is not in the tabernacle!)

Now, a rock concert on the other hand…

I never heard of such a thing at a parish church, nor at the diocesan Cathedral.

At the La Salette Shrine near me, yes, during Christmas. However, it’s Christmas music often sung by a Catholic Priest, Fr Pat, who is very good.

I totally agree with your opinion! I have tried my best to wake up the ‘religious’ in this diocese to these distasteful & disrespectful concerts but so far, it’s fallen on deaf ears! Will continue to fight this, in a respectful way, as these are ridiculous. Food & wine should not be distributed inside the church during a concert! I am totally disgusted with this certain church & have left that parish & joined another which would never permit such nonsense! Thank you!
 
They are very disrespectful concerts & who would ever want to enter a church with their hair in curlers, wearing a robe or pjs, flip-flops or floppy slippers! There needs to be respect anytime a person enters a church!
 
These aren’t rock concerts but it’s coming close to it! They are very disrespectful!
 
I’ve seen non-religious concerts in a Catholic church. The sanctuary area was walled off and the Blessed Sacrament was, I presume, removed. I don’t remember if there was any food or drink, I’m thinking maybe not, but it was some years ago.

I’ve also seen non-religious concerts in Protestant churches and a synagogue.

I would imagine all these places do it to get money to help keep up the church buildings, which in all cases were very nice and also old.
 
I’ve gone to two live plays by Leonardo Defilippis.

St Francis of Assisi, and Maximilian Kolbe.

He did an excellent job on both.

The sanctuary area was walled off with a curtain

He’s great. I went to his St. John Vianney one last year. It was in a church. I learned all kinds of stuff about St. John Vianney I never knew.

He’s supposed to be doing Augustine Tolton next.

No disrespect but I do not agree with you. I did email the pastor of a basilica in a nearby State & was told these types of non-religious
concerts are not to be held inside the church & I need to keep fighting it; which I will continue to do! We’ve never had anything like this

happen previously! Would you believe ballerinas were dancing in the sanctuary around the altar & men in their tights! IT IS SACRILEGIOUS!

Something needs to be done about these types of concerts! This new music director has no respect!!!

Don’t know why the play couldn’t be held in a church or school hall. What is going on with this Church when they feel
concerts need to be held inside especially when they’re so inappropriate! I feel the play is fine about the Saints but not

a goofy concert. There is a play every Lent in my previous parish called “Via Crucis” (Way of the Cross) & is performed by

children & teenagers (no talking…the Gospel is read by a priest & he has a fabulous voice!). It begins with the entrance into

Jerusalem & ends when Christ is placed in the tomb…it is in the sanctuary of the church. In fact, one of our previous pastors

was able to obtain the armor, helmets & other outfits from the movie, “Ben Hur”. They were shipped here from Italy! This performance

is in it’s 61st yr. In fact, I was a participant in the mid-60’s & my son in the mid-80’s. This is appropriate as it’s a ‘Living Prayer” unlike

a goofy & disgusting so-called popsicle concert!

What about Rock n’ Roll songs that have a religious theme or lyrics that can be considered spiritual at least.
Some examples
People Get Ready - Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions
Healing Hands - Elton John
You Raise Me Up - Josh Groban
Bridge Over Troubled Waters - Simon and Garfunkel (and Aretha Franklin on You Tube)
And others. Inspirational or sacrilegious?

THIS IS THE LORD’S HOUSE! Don’t forget when Christ entered the Temple & turned over the tables when he saw the moneychangers, etc.!

The Host wasn’t present at that time & yet, Christ became very irate! The Church is getting way too liberal!

what kind of concert are you referring too? Classical music or something else? If it’s classical music, it’s most likely fine since a lot of that was written for the Church.

But if it’s something like a U2 cover band, that’s not really appropriate

Have you listened to the words of the others? Quite spiritual; in fact, People Get Ready I believe is based on a hymn sung in Protestant churches.
As to the popsicles etc. has nothing to do with my question. I am only questioning the nature of the lyrics.

Well, I agree that there can be excesses; I lived through the 60’s and 70’s post VII. I was shocked. But then again, about 70% of baptized Catholics have to one degree or another abandoned the faith. Maybe something better than the funeral dirge inspired music I hear all to often at Mass may appeal to more people.

I agree with you! The “Spooktacular” advertised in the bulletin even mentioned the people may see ghosts & goblins in the sanctuary of the church! CAN YOU IMAGINE?!
