At a time when nearly 200 families of St. Mary’s – Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East were preparing to celebrate the move into a new facility, church leaders and members are dealing with issues of hate and, perhaps, mistaken identity.
Vandals defaced the outside of the congregation’s new church, at 4320 14 Mile, by spraying anti-Arab threats onto the building. The church is scheduled to host its first Mass May 6 after nearly 20 years at its location on Toepfer Road.
Among the messages left in blue and black paint were “1 God Jesus” and “Arabs Die.” Most were left at the rear of the building.
Pretty surprising that it would happen in Detroit. They have a huge population of Catholics from the Middle East that have been there for generations and just more recently Arabs who are Muslims. My mother went to parochial school with lots of Chaldean Catholics there in the 1950’s.
My guess is that the sort of person(s) who would do something like this is also the sort of person who wouldn’t notice the difference between Arab Muslims and Middle Eastern Catholics. They would only see “foreign”.
WEll talk about idiocy Assyrians are not Arabs for one thing and Catholics beleive in Jesus of course. Probably some white anglo saxton protestant who thinks Jesus died only for white evangelicals and not the entire world regardless of race or ethnicity. Of course this sort of stuff happend to Irish Catholics and Italian Catholics back in the day now the subject of discrimination are people of middle east descent even our fellow Middle Eastern Catholics and Orthodox brothers and sisters. Plain silly they worship the same God we do Jesus Christ but these ignoramous won’t do their homework before they spew their hate and doing this sort of stuff to Muslims is sick also. Be angry with the teorrist yes but not innocent people who just so happen to have ethnic roots to a general area where terrorist happen to circulate. This is thier type of mindset and shouldn’t be ours in America.
