How can some one make this accusation:

“The Catholic Church burned the books of the bible and spent 560 years fabricating the old and new testament.”

How can they say this?

:whacky:

Obviously, this is untrue! The Church has done a marvelous job of preserving Sacred Scripture from various corruptions.

I would be interested, though, in the timeline of their 560 years. Does your source give a start and end date for the “560 years fabricating the old and new testament”. Is it the last 560 years??

Just curious.

Honestly I think they were talking out their rear end.

It’s the website care2.com but I finding so many people rapped up in self and relativsm it is scary. There is even a group called Progressive Catholics. which they want married priests, women priests, they think the canon can be changed on so many issues. But yet they call themselves Catholic.

I think it is a nice change of pace for the whole anti-Catholic rhetoric concerning the Bible’s origins. At least in this case they recognize the Church’s role and authority. :rotfl:

(But for some reason seem to be rejecting scripture…) I wouldn’t worry too much over such people!

They may call that progressive, but it’s sure not Catholic!!

The Catholic Church is progressive in my mind:
  1. Fights for the Poor
  2. Fights for Education
  3. Fights for Democracy
  4. Promotes interacial harmony
The list goes on.

During the Church’s existance, many books were burned or destroyed but it should be pointed out not by Christians but by the Romans persecuting we Catholics (Eastern and Western Traditions). It was the Roman practice, when a religion was deemed dangrous to the state, to eradicate the religion by first destroying its leadership followed by a persecution general membership (usually with the intention once a persecution started those involved would come to their senses and give up their atheistic practices - hard to believe we were once thought of as atheists) and at the same destroying any shred of the religion’s (cult’s) existance by destroying its liturature.

As for the charge that the Catholic Church’s re working the Bible, for some reason I sense that at its root is the question of the Canon of Scripture and the “Apocrytha”.

They are Catholic, and you have no right to say otherwise. They just happen to be a group that desires some changes in the church. You may disagree with them, but to say they are not Catholic is not your call.

Perhaps your are right but when you say the things they do. Saying contraceptive is Ok; Gay marriage is OK; Some even saying abortion is ok; Confession is not necessary and the list goes on is in direct teachings of the Catholic Church. How can one say they are Catholic. Perhaps Protestant but not Catholic.

Interesting thread.

Recently I had someone insist to me that the Church added the idea of original sin and the sin of Adam & Eve much later. that the writing styles are totally different - proof that it was an afterthought. Because, without sin there would be no need for the sacrament of reconciliatin (and the selling of indulgences).

He said that there was a writer in Asia Minor who was very popular and sold a lot of books back in the early days of Christianity who started this whole “sin business”.

Can’t recall the name of the early writer.

I can’t speak for them, because I don’t belong to that group. However, I have a problem with somebody pronouncing a particular person, not catholic, just because they don’t agree 100% with current doctrine. If we eliminated all those folks from attending church, the pews would be way emptier than they are now. BTW, in many catholic churchs, the pews are already pretty empty.

So we yeild? So we allow the faith and what Christ instituted and guided us through the Holy Spirit, to crumble? Do we just call ouselves Protestant?

I didn’t say that. However, folks need to worry more about their own relationship with God, and stop worrying so much about everybody else’s. Everybody will eventually answer to God, and it’s up to him, and only him on how we are judged. BTW, I don’t agree with 100% of doctrine either, yet I consider myself still very much a catholic.

Concerning Protestants, I’m guessing there will be just as many of them in heaven as there are Catholics in the end. Being a good Christian is the bottom line.

BTW, we are way off the thread topic here.

Ya just a tad. But to be honest that is where I got that comment from… Progressive Catholic group.

And I suppose the Church coerced the Jews to accept the Torah and the rest of the OT as re-written .
