The Church referred to in the creeds is the mystical Body of Christ, that is the company of all baptized Christians. It does not refer exclusively to the Church of Rome. The confusion lies in the fact that many people call that particular part of the Church ‘the Catholic Church’ as if it comprises the whole. Thus, imprecise language and poor catechesis leads people into all sorts of problems.

The Latin (Western) Catholic Church - 1 sui iuris Church that celebrates many liturgical rites

Actively celebrated Latin Church Liturgical Rites:
Roman Rite, whose historical forms are usually classified as follows:
  1. Pre-Tridentine Mass (the various pre-1570 forms)
  2. Tridentine Mass (1570-1970 and still authorized in circumstances indicated in the document Summorum Pontificum as an extraordinary form of the Roman Rite)
  3. Mass of Paul VI (1970–present)
  4. Anglican Use (restricted to formerly Anglican congregations)
Actively celebrated Latin Church Liturgical Rites continued:
Ambrosian Rite (Milan, Italy and neighbouring areas)
Aquileian Rite (defunct: northeastern Italy)
Rite of Braga (Braga, Portugal)
Mozarabic Rite (Toledo and Salamanca, Spain)

Defunct or rarely celebrated Latin Church Liturgical Rites:
Durham Rite (defunct: Durham, England)
Gallican Rite (defunct: Gaul, i.e., France)
Celtic Rite (defunct: British Isles)
Sarum Rite (defunct: England)
Catholic Order Rites (generally defunct)
Benedictine Rite
Carmelite Rite
Carthusian Rite
Cistercian Rite
Dominican Rite
Franciscan Rite
Friars Minor Capuchin Rite
Premonstratensian Rite
Servite Rite
Good list. 👍

The Edict of Thessalonica, issued on 27 February 380, which established Nicene Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire stated:

“It is our desire that all the various nations which are subject to our Clemency and Moderation, should continue to profess that religion which was delivered to the Romans by the divine Apostle Peter, as it has been preserved by faithful tradition, and which is now professed by the Pontiff Damasus and by Peter, Bishop of Alexandria, a man of apostolic holiness. According to the apostolic teaching and the doctrine of the Gospel, let us believe in the one deity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, in equal majesty and in a holy Trinity. We authorize the followers of this law to assume the title of Catholic Christians; but as for the others, since, in our judgment they are foolish madmen, we decree that they shall be branded with the ignominious name of heretics, and shall not presume to give to their conventicles the name of churches. They will suffer in the first place the chastisement of the divine condemnation and in the second the punishment of our authority which in accordance with the will of Heaven we shall decide to inflict.”

I must credit it to Wikipedia. I just divided it differently to show the many Uses/ways of practicing the Roman Rite. 🙂
I saw the official name of North Korea–The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. I know that does’t fit in with the discussion but I just found it interesting.🤷

North Korea’s official name is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. South Korea’s official name is the Republic of Korea. 🙂

It is really sad that the two countries have been at each others throats for over 60 years. That new dictator in the North Kim Jong Un reminds me of Porky Pig only much more spooky!

From what I can see the “offical” name is the Catholic Church. This would incluce the Western(roman/latin) and the Eastern braches of the church and all Rite within.

Good artical on this at
ewtn.com/faith/teachings/churb3.htm
why, in the West, does the term Catholic mostly refer to the Roman Catholic Church? For years I didn’t know there was anything more than just the Roman Catholic Church.🤷

I would say the term “Catholic Church” refers to the Roman Communion – that is, to all churches in full communion with Rome. (Note the plural churches.)

Lack of education until recent years that there is A eastern lung to the Church that is in Full communion with rome, but with an seperate Liturgical tradition. Most all people when hearing of eastern Church thnk only of the seperated Orthodox and knew nothing of those that were still in communion with the West. This is a sad event that is another byproduct of the great schism. Slowly we of the Western Church are learning of our Eastern Brothers and all the richness that they bring to the Church as a whole. A lot of the lack of knowledge of the Eastern Church may also have to do with the Protestant Reformation. As when you are fighting with in your own house it had to pay attention to what else is going on and slowly over the course of time you can forget about those in your family that are far and are like the cousin that you have not seen since childhoos, they are part of your family but you know nothing about them and had forgotten who they are.

It is so so sad because we must remember that St Peter was the Bishop of Antioch before comeing to Rome. So given that And that Chirst and all the Apostles came form Israel ( which is in the East) The Western Church is an outgrowth of the Eastern and we owe It much.

Those in the Eastern Church as a rule seem to be bitterly persecuted since they mostly live in places where you are legally forbidden to practice any form of Christianity. Thank you for educating this “dummy” about the church more than I was previously aware. HAPPY EASTER!!🙂

A blessed Easter to you and yours.

Wasn’t the Church simply called the universal Christian Church?? The Greek word, Katholic was added around the time of the Nicene Creed?..meaning universal…but Roman added when?..

Good question.
You are warm Kathleen. The first use of the word “catholic” to describe the Church founded by Christ is by Luke in Acts 9:31 " Meanwhile the church throughout…"

The term “the Church throughout” (universal) stuck, and was in common use by the early 2nd century (110 AD) and was used in conciliar documents centuries before Nicea.

See that ye all follow the bishop, even as Christ Jesus does the Father, and the presbytery as ye would the apostles. Do ye also reverence the deacons, as those that carry out the appointment of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is [administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude also be; by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church." Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to the Smyrneans, 8:2 (c. A.D. 110).

“[A]ll the people wondered that there should be such a difference between the unbelievers and the elect, of whom this most admirable Polycarp was one, having in our own times been an apostolic and prophetic teacher, and bishop of the Catholic Church which is in Smyrna. For every word that went out of his mouth either has been or shall yet be accomplished.” Martyrdom of Polycarp, 16:2 (A.D. 155).

“…to be in honour however with the Catholic Church for the ordering of ecclesiastical discipline…one to the Laodicenes, another to the Alexandrians, both forged in Paul’s name to suit the heresy of Marcion, and several others, which cannot be received into the Catholic Church; for it is not fitting that gall be mixed with honey. The Epistle of Jude no doubt, and the couple bearing the name of John, are accepted by the Catholic Church…But of Arsinous, called also Valentinus, or of Militiades we receive nothing at all.” The fragment of Muratori (A.D. 177).

“[N]or does it consist in this, that he should again falsely imagine, as being above this [fancied being], a Pleroma at one time supposed to contain thirty, and at another time an innumerable tribe of Aeons, as these teachers who are destitute of truly divine wisdom maintain; while the Catholic Church possesses one and the same faith throughout the whole world, as we have already said.” Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 1:10,3 (A.D. 180).

“For it is evident that those men lived not so long ago,–in the reign of Antoninus for the most part,–and that they at first were believers in the doctrine of the Catholic Church, in the church of Rome under the episcopate of the blessed Eleutherus, until on account of their ever restless curiosity, with which they even infected the brethren, they were more than once expelled.” Tertullian, On the Prescription Against Heretics, 22,30 (A.D. 200).

”Whence you ought to know that the bishop is in the Church, and the Church in the bishop; and if any one be not with the bishop, that he is not in the Church, and that those flatter themselves in vain who creep in, not having peace with God’s priests, and think that they communicate secretly with some; while the Church, which is Catholic and one, is not cut nor divided, but is indeed connected and bound together by the cement of priests who cohere with one another.” Cyprian, To Florentius, Epistle 66/67 (A.D. 254).

“But for those who say, There was when He was not, and, Before being born He was not, and that He came into existence out of nothing, or who assert that the Son of God is of a different hypostasis or substance…these the Catholic and apostolic Church anathematizes.” Creed of Nicea (A.D. 325).

“Concerning those who call themselves Cathari, if they come over to the Catholic and Apostolic Church, the great and holy Synod decrees that they who are ordained shall continue as they are in the clergy. But it is before all things necessary that they should profess in writing that they will observe and follow the dogmas of the Catholic and Apostolic Church; in particular that they will communicate with persons who have been twice married, and with those who having lapsed in persecution have had a period [of penance] laid upon them, and a time [of restoration] fixed so that in all things they will follow the dogmas of the Catholic Church…” Council of Nicaea I (A.D. 325).

Our Church is the one founded by Christ. It is His bride. It is the only two thousand year old Church. All others are pretenders. As such, it is the Church of Christ. It is the Bride of Christ. It is the Pillar and Ground of faith. Unless your “church” can trace it’s history back 2000 years, then your “church” is a pretender.
It is important that we respect the valid Holy Orders and Sacaments of our Eastern Orthodox brethren, and the fact that the Holy Spirit works through non-Catholic ecclesial communities. Authentic grace and Truth are found outside the visible boundaries of the Catholic Church.
