Catholic college vs. public

The college I want to go to is Slippery Rock University for a double major in music therapy and french education or for a creative wrting thing. It is cheap compared to most colleges. I don’t know they don’t have a chapel or anything but there is a catholic church very very close to the campus. Does that suffice for my spiritual needs or should I go to an all around catholic college.
 
If you feel that college is right for you then go for it. However be prepared to have your faith/beliefs challenged. It’s not for sure that your faith will be challenged but possible. Seeing that there is a Catholic Church near by that should not be a problem. Only you know for sure if that college is meets your spiritual needs. If I were in your situation I’d go for it.

You should consider visiting the parish sometime before you make the decision. See what kind of people go there. Is the pastor faithful to the Magisterium? Does he show that in how the parish is run? Are there ministries for college students/young adults? You don’t necessarily have to find a Catholic college, but you should find one with a substantial Catholic ministry of some sort. You have opportunities to do things in College ministries that you don’t have once you leave college. Many offer retreats, weekly discussions, Mass, and other things as well. That’s not something I’d want to miss out on.

LOL! I had to laugh. I thought when the OP mentioned Slippery Rock Uni. that it was a made up name…guess there is actaully such a place:)

wow, thank you for finding that out for me. I’ve heard of a New man center before but I never knew wha it was.

What is the cost difference? Does the Catholic college offer the majors you want?

I would say if they offer the majors you want and the cost is not that different go to the catholic college.

have your parents file a financial aid form in January, very likely you qualify for aid, and there is actually more aid available at a private college, and it may bring the cost down to less than the state school (as it did for DD, even though both parents were working). Your parents need to cooperate, because your custodial parent and the one who claims you on their tax form as an exemption need to provide financial info. If one parent will not cooperate, consult your HS guidance counsellor or talk to an FAFS rep directly for help. your college website, the financial aid page, will direct you to their website, you can file on-line any time after 1/1/08 for the coming academic year.

If you are close to Slippery Rock, Franciscan U of Steubenville is not far away, and one of the best Catholic colleges you will find anywhere, and most of their students receive some type of financial aid. It has been rated in some guides as one of the best values in private schools.

the first thing to find out is if they have the majors and courses you need. a public school with a good Newman Center or a good parish close by that welcomes students into parish life and has a solid liturgical life is preferably to a historically Catholic school that has abandoned its Catholic identity and mission.
