This 750 word article written by Patricia McGuire, President of Trinity College in Washington D.C.attacks the Pope, IMO.

I hope someone responds to it in the newspaper.

The first sentence sums up the sad state of Catholic higher education(for the most part)

Mindless dogmatism is not part of the Catholic intellectual tradition.

In fairness, she make some important points. We DON’T want mindless dogmatism. We want a robust and intellectual dogmatism!

We want a catholic faithful who knows what the Church teaches, knows WHY she teaches it, knows the arguments against her and knows why they are wrong. THAT is what catholic universities are supposed to be for!

Her argument seems to boil down to “if we just let anything go, people will figure out the truth for themselves.” Umm, then why bother HAVING a university with a catholic identity? Heck, if THAT is true, why bother having a catholic hierarchy? Why not just be consistant and declare that Luther was right, shut down the school and tell the kids to save themselves a fortune and go the local state university?
