I am in desperate need of a good, Catholic counselor. I have contacted the Carmelites in our area, and have received a recommendation. I’m waiting on a call back, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be out of reach, financially. How do you go about finding QUALITY Catholic counseling at an affordable price? Any suggestions? Thanks!

The keyword here is quality. That kinda goes hand in hand with money.

Just be honest with the counselor the Carmelites have a contacted. Tell him/her you need help, and you’ll pay what you can, but it may not be what they are use to.

It can’t hurt to ask. And you’ll find most professionals will work with you.

Good luck.

You might ask if they have a “sliding scale” for their fees. Some places do that. The amount you pay is dependent on your income. I’ve been that route before. Only problem was, the counselor wasn’t any good. Sometimes you have to go through a couple of them (or more) before you find one that really works for you (and with you). Of course, with luck, the one you start with is the one for you. I’ll be praying that it is. 👍

A friend of mine is seeing a wonderful Catholic counselor in the DC area. They used a sliding scale; she’s paying 1/2 the regular hourly fee.

1tiredmom, I am in the UK and I have been in your position both as a seeker and as a counsellor.

I dearly wanted to counsel in a Catholic setting but it was unheard of here at that time which was about 10 years ago. I don’t think anything has changed… I can see nothing on our diocese website either. It is so important to me that we need Catholic counsellors.

However, you are in the US and all I can tell you is go to a convent. Many sisters are trained in counselling. I’m sure the Sisters of Mercy are. Call your pastor because he will have the numbers.

You need to talk this through with someone who is not going to judge but will care for you.

I didn’t read your post properly. As far as cost is concerned, try your pastor. He is there to listen and advise.
