Yeah, you’re definitely right about that one being kind of twangy. It’s because the song itself is like four or five-hundred years old, and he was going for that ancient merry olde England ballad sound, which is what that song actually is. Merle Travis was actually a superlatively gifted guitar player though, and it really is completely evident on most of his recordings; that was just kind of an unusual one, for a number of different reasons. I mean, he was country and western so he didn’t sound like Jimi Hendrix or someone, but he was most assuredly in that same class.
And maybe I shouldn’t have bagged on modern country music quite so much, because there are some flat out fantastic modern country performers out there. I’m partial to this guy, too; his musical sensibility is quite often right on target, and can be just fiery hot and moving:
