Catholic couple looking to adopt

Hello. My wife and I are looking to adopt. We have not ruled out ‘fost-adopt’ programs and non-infants/toddlers, but as still a young couple ourselves would like to adopt a child from birth or a very young infant, if possible.

Foreign adoption is cost-prohibitive. Does anyone here have knowledge of adoption and expected costs and what to expect? Or resources? I know some dioceses and Catholic Charities have such programs, looking to match mothers considering adoption for their soon-to-be-born child with prospective adoptive parents. We are perfectly fine with an open adoption.

That is wonderful. More adoptive parents are needed.
We adopted through foster-adoption; they place children who are very likely to be free for adoption with parents who are willing to adopt. You could look into it with your state foster program, since they differ according to your state.

It is not for the faint of heart, but then adoption usually isn’t. We were sent a 28 month old, then a 2 year old, who was placed back with his mother. Then a 10 month old. Then they called us and asked if we would take the 2 year old again, as his mother couldn’t care for him.
We had to turn him down, since we had just gotten the little girl and the 2 year old was a serious biter. I still regret not having taken him, though.
We adopted both the 28 month old and the 10 month old; they are 23 and 20 now.

You receive a stipend for foster adoption; it was equal to what foster parents receive, though that may have changed. Also the costs of the adoption were reimbursed by the state.

Unfortunately, there are a fair number of babies and toddlers in the foster care system.
There are quite a few good books on the subject; I suggest you look for some at the library.
