Happily, my decree of Nullity has been granted… I signed onto Ave Maria singles… and after the rather expensive sign-up… I’m a little disappointed.

I’ve heard good things about the site but there are very few women in my area on it.

That’s a common lament on any dating site.

Expand your geographic search area, look into other dating sites, and always keep your options open. I met my husband on Craigslist of all places. Never let it be said that advertising for someone set up a new computer system doesn’t pay off in more ways than one.

Two things online dating takes a lot of is time and patience. Make sure you have a cracking good profile, and don’t let your initial disappointment in the lack of area women show up there (e.g., “Hey, just seeing if there are any decent Catholic women in Sacramento because I’m not seeing many here.”) because that’s a surefire way to turn ladies off.

Just because it was expensive to join doesn’t guarantee you’ll meet someone there. It just means their membership fees are high.

**If you are thinking of branching out onto a different dating site, I would maybe try to keep away from “Christian Mingle”, you being a Catholic. Several people have told me that a majority of the Christians there don’t think of the Catholics as Christian, and on their church locations site, they don’t even list the Catholic Church.

Like was mentioned, I would think looking at a larger geographic area would be helpful, and because of distance, you can become friends first before actually dating.**

I think you should skip the dating site all together and go to Catholic events and social things, especially ones that are a little out of your area, like 30 mins away or something like that. I’m a single, Catholic female and I would never join a dating website - I’m sure I’m not the only single Catholic woman to think this. We’re out there!

Good luck.

I have joined a number of online dating services in the past and was also disappointed,as many of the guys were not sincere and came off as "players"Stay away from some of the free sites;POF,Datehookup,Ok Cupid,Book Of Matches(BOM) and Singlesnet.I have heard good things about eharmony.🙂

I remember hearing that Ave Maria was a site intended for Catholics who are pretty serious about marriage as their vocation. That might be why the membership fee is so high (to filter out the non-serious people). I’d also think that’s why there aren’t many people on there (a very specific target audience).

If you want to get a little more selection of people in your area, I’d recommend Catholicmatch. The trade off is that you’ll likely be talking to people who may not be as serious about marriage as the ones you would find on Ave Maria.

As for the mainstream sites like Match.com, etc… I think you could get lucky and meet some faithful catholics but you’re likely going to have to sift through a lot of catholics who are non-practicing or nominally practicing.

But remember, God has chosen your true spouse before you were even born. So don’t panick or worry because, regardless of what dating site you’re subscribed to, the person who you are being called to be with will come into your life when God is ready for it to happen!

I wouldn’t rely on AM as your only means of finding a spouse but it’s a good start. A friend of mine met his spouse there as well as some others I know. I was there 2 years and didn’t have luck so it’s not full proof. It’s a bit on the expensive side too so I wouldn’t go back. Keep in mind that whatever your plans are if GOD may have others for you.

IT will also give you great practice at dating again.

I am on Ava Maria and am finding there are very few men in my area. One good thing about that site is you don’t have to pay monthly, one fee until you decide to leave. I have tried other dating sites and haven’t had any luck. I am taking a break from online dating. Where abouts do you live? How old are you? There are a lot of singles activities, but vary depending on age.

Don’t completely toss out every dating site.

I met my Fiance on Match.com. What is lacks in specific discernment it certainly makes up for in sheer numbers. You can make a profile that specifies what is important to you and I’m sure you will find someone who is looking for chaste relationship. E-Harmony might be helpful narrowing down your search.

My Fiance and I were well matched. He was the second guy I went out with from that site and I was his first and we hit it off immediately and never looked back! 🙂

I’m a firm believer that online dating absolutely works. I don’t think it’s any different then going to a social event for singles. It’s just done online.

I can’t emphasize enough that looking outside of your immediate area is vital on Catholic dating sites. I think there were three guys in my area on AMS, and I wasn’t at all interested in any of them. My boyfriend–who I met on AMS–lives almost five hours from me. It’s hard (and as we get fonder of one another, the distance gets tougher), but thus far, we’ve made it work. I doubt I’d ever have met him in “real life,” and I’m grateful daily for AMS.

Broaden your search to include all geographic areas, adjust it by age and appropriate answers to some questions, and maybe throw in a keyword or two. See what happens. If she’s Miss Right, you’ll be willing to fly across the country to meet her, and vice versa.

God bless you in your search!

Apologies, Op, for a bit of hijacking, but this thread seems to be the perfect place to ask these questions.

I have a question about these dating sites- I also want to join but I don’t like the idea of just anyone on the net just typing my name and coming across and reading my profile and seeing my pictures. Is there a way to make your profile visible only to those who have joined the sites and no-one else?

Also Catholicmatch.com seems to be limited only to the US and Western countries. Are there some that are open to Catholics from all over the Planet? Thanks.

I agree with this.
I’m also single…
A good friend gave me a membership on a Christian dating site that she helped create, and I see that people actually meet their spouse in this way, so I would never tell anyone that it doesn’t work.

However, I know that a great many people, myself included, that are rather sceptical with net-dating, find it utterly unromantic and somewhat a like superficial meet market… and an ackward way to meet too… and honestly I think many of us wonder what kind of men need to be on the internet to meet good Catholic ladies when there are so many single ladies out there and a scarcety of men… Join any church group and you will meet at least a few ladies of good taste and intelligence, whereas often the young men are no where to be seen.

I have met some over the internet but was never able to fall for any of them… some were odd or scary (or both), others well, I think there was too much pressure from the onset so that one could not observe the other in a natural way over time and decide for or against a friendship…

I have met both men and women who would not go on netdating for one reason or the other… or who do so halfheartedly but who are more than willing to make the good aquaintance of a Catholic man in real life…

Marysbeloved: my experience is only with Ave Maria Singles, but I can answer your questions in the context of AMS.

On AMS, I have to check a box on my profile to let it be used on the website’s “front page.” Only an abbreviated version of your profile is used there. Last names aren’t even in the complete profile; it’s your discretion when to tell someone your last name. (I didn’t tell the guy I’m dating now until we’d met a few times, as my last name is almost unique.) So yes, there’s a way to make your profile visible only to those who’ve joined AMS, at least, but even if someone were to do a Google search of your name your profile wouldn’t come up. Frankly, it would have to be a fairly idiotic webmaster to allow members to post last names in their profiles, so I can’t imagine that Catholic Match or the others would allow it.

AMS has members from all over the world, though most are in the U.S. or Western Europe.

Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for the words of wisdom. Clearly, I will have to branch out more. 🙂 …at this time, I am just sticking a toe in the water with AMS. it was not too overly expensive as I got in on a single parent discount… and you only have to pay that fee once, which is nice.

I really like Catholicmatch.com because you can search for certain types of Catholics. One, I only search for those that believe in ALL 7 of their questions about our faith. It asks if you believe in papal infallibility, pre marital sex, birth control, Holy Orders, Immaculate Conception, the Eucharist, and the sanctity of life. I feel if you you don’t agree on all, then you’re not really Catholic. A high number of people are ok with pre marital sex and contrception and agree with the rest. I feel that those people are only after one thing, and they don’t want to marry me because of my faith or that I’m loving and can help them get to Heaven.

You can also see how they view their faith and if they go to Mass every week or only when they turn to God in their time of need etc. You can narrow your search down by many of things and its free until you want to contact someone or read your e-mails from others.

God bless and I’ll pray for you.

Well those 7 question exists for a reason. Not everyone agrees 100% with the church but still consider themselves Catholic. If your reasoning was correct,Catholicmatch.com would have weeded out plenty of people by now.

Well… if one wants to avoid the ‘cafeteria catholic’… I’ll look into Catholic match too. I’d heard there was more scam profiles there than ave maria
