[Updated 1:10 p.m. June 29] The Catholic Diocese of Sacramento has agreed to pay $35 million to 33 alleged victims of clergy sexual abuse.

The two sides reached the agreement Wednesday morning, a day before the first civil case was scheduled to go to trial. It is one of the largest settlements by the church, per plaintiff, in the nation.

The diocese made no admission of guilt in settling the cases, which involved 10 priests. The majority of cases involve the Rev. Mario Blanco, who was dismissed from Sacramento amid allegations but still has a church in Tacoma, Wash., where he is an independent, traditionalist priest.

“We’re pleased the survivors will now have the opportunity to get the help they need,” said Joseph George, who is representing the plaintiffs.

Under the settlement, the victims will receive an average of $1.1 million. The minimum paid out will be $400,000 while the most one victim will receive is $4.25 million, according to George.

The first payment of $15 million will be made Aug. 15. (The cases originally involved 34 plaintiffs, but one has died.)

“We’re pleased a settlement has been worked out,” said Kevin Eckery, spokesman for the diocese.

The Sacramento Diocese will not close schools or parishes in the wake of the settlement, officials said Wednesday. Insurance, loans and the sale of property are expected to raise the $35 million. For more details, return to sacbee.com or see Thursday’s Bee.

Lets get a few things straight. We did this to ourselves ! We allowed it to happen ! We listened to priests and Bishops that told us not to go to the police, not to embarass the church. They told us they would take care of it.We could trust them. Liars all from priests to Cardinals ,liars all.
They turned out to be no better than cops, docters, lawyers, they protected their own. That they were sapose to be working for God had no influnece, nor that these were children.
Not one bishop ever called the cops ,on his own. To this day the USCCB refuses to do anything to bishops that its own investigators said should be removed.Much less to all the rest that made it possible for some of these monsters to commit their abominations. The Total payouts nationwide have passed $ 1,600,000,000.00 and its climbing.

To put some fairness on it, we most likely are loosing some innocent, good priests in these scandals… I remember someone posted an article on how the Church deals with said claims, usually outcasting the Priest and shattering any bit of his reputation while not even asking if he’s innocence…
They’d prefer to cover up these such things causing innocent children and Priest to be harmed while hiding the wrong-doers who cause more harm…

We must pray for our bishops, for our priests and also for all the victims.

Alleged ? How many are for real and how many jumped on the pay out band wagon ? The lawyers will probably get half of it anyway 😦

The pay out band wagon…you hit the nail on the head. It would be interesting to see where all the pay out money gets spent. 😦

I would be ashamed to take money from the church.

Exactly. Once the few really bad priests were convicted the church was deemed guilty of ANY allegation without necessarily showing real damages. As you said the attorneys get a boatload and I can’t imagine they suffered much. The whole thing disgusts me to no end.

Hello

Very sad case to hear. This should have dealt with swiftly and errors amended as soon as possible. Remember the seed of evil, do not exclude priest. The temptation of the flesh is there no matter who you are.

God Bless
