I was born and raised in Bay St Louis, MS which was on the
eastern side-wall of hurricane Katrina. My home town has basically been wiped off the face of the earth.
We have gotten aid from many people outside the area. Many of those have been of a religious affiliation and others not. Some of the aid was governmental. At least in Bay St Louis, the religious aid that I have seen has been primarily from the protestants (Baptists, Methodists, etc.). They have set up large camps designed for feeding many of the victims. They serve three meals a day and provide groups of people that volunteer their time to help individuals.
Our church has been able to work on rebuilding the structures that were destroyed due to previous fund-raisers and has been given some support from the Knights of Columbus. The diocese will provide aid to rebuild the various chuches in the near future.
But, what I do not see is the direct relief to the people of our area (Catholic and non-Catholic). I do not see groups of people from other parishes around the US that have come to our aid. Perhaps, there are Catholic Relief groups in other areas hit by Katrina. That is why I am posting this. Do you know of any Catholic groups that have come down to this area to give direct support to the victims of Katrina?
