Hi, it’s JPhoenix again. I’m Catholic and I got a big problem. There’s another Forum I go to and met a protestant who says that Catholic Dogma Goes against Bible Teaching. I’ll paste the attachment of his claims. Can you correct or clarify any info on this.

This a common fallacy promoted by Protestants. It is absolutely not true.

Contrary to their opinion or interpretations, there is absolutely no Catholic doctrine or dogma that has ever or will ever contradict scriptures.

Prior to any declaration, especially one that is issued “Ex Cathedra”, the Church and all its scriptural scholars does extensive research to one verify that the doctrine is true and two make sure that there is no scriptural passage that contradicts the new doctrine.

It MAY be the case that scriptures has no mention of such a doctrine, as such a doctrine may be entirely new or the doctrine is a new revelation. However it is the expressed policy of the Church that no new doctrine or dogma will ever be declared IF it is in opposition to accepted scriptures.

The doctrines that Protestants have the most problems, have all been affirmed as true by revelations and events subsequent to the time of the written Word. What is so amazing is that mysteries that may at one time been controversial are verified by God and Heaven itself through the intervention of various saints and miraculous events.

The real presence of Christ in the Eucharist has been established in miracles in Lanciano (8th Century), and Cascia Italy (15th century) and in Walldurn Germany (15th Century). Our Ladies appearance in Lourdes was the direct answer to the Immaculate Conception.

When Mary or Jesus Himself answers the questions or issues of the day, it is unquestionablely true that the Pope in union with the Magisterium speaks infallibly when it declares a doctrine to be true. It makes Protestants look foolish when they question these doctrines. We know it’s true because the Holy Spirit speaking through the Church, says it is so.

O Boy! Are you in for some wonderful times! You have a Catechism, of course. I just sprang for the 48 CD teaching on it, *The Teaching of Jesus Christ, *by Fr. John Corapi (fathercorapi.com/search.aspx) – What a great resource for someone just exploring the faith. I got it at a Corapi mission, so it was $50 off retail (the price is $245, $225 for tapes). OK that’s a lot of money but it’s less than taking your family for a day at Disney World. Where I live, it’s dinner and wine for four at a good restaurant. Definitely worth the outlay.
i’ve been tivo-ing fr. corapi on ewtn for several months. man, can that guy preach! he definitely has the charism of “apostolic preaching”! i just couldn’t spring for the full set…😦

i have purchased some tim staples cds, however. talk about bible-based catholicism! i am luck enough to have a “catholic shoppe” near me, and they have all sorts of tape sets for excellent prices.

luckily, a couple of months ago the “fullness of truth” conference came to corpus christi, tx, and i attended all day, every day. fr. corapi, fr. mitch pacwa, and tim staples all talked (rosalind moss was sick, so couldn’t speak). these folks really know how to light a fire! some of the best money i’ve ever spent! i would recommend this conference to anyone and everyone!

You are causing your dear mercygate to fall into the sin of covetousness!

vox,

where did you get this info?!? did you take a class? is there a special set of apologetics books that i need to keep up with you?? i don’t consider myself a dumb guy (i’m a formally trained nuclear engineer, computer scientist, and shortly: attorney), but i’m constantly humbled by knowledge like yours and many others here!! how can i catch up fastest?

grateful to have you on our side,
RyanL
🙂 A humble thank you. Actually, while you were training to be an engineer (I failed out of that program!), I was working on my history degree. I teach mostly ancient and medieval european history; I also have a side interest in Italian history. So, I’d like to think that I have a pretty good handle on some of the historical info. As for Catholic doctine and apologetics, the people on these forums generally blow me away.

Others have suggested some good books. As for websites, check out the old Catholic Encyclopedia at Newadvent.org. It’s a little dated in places, and can be hard to read, but it has a lot of relevant articles. The Code of Canon Law and the Catechism of the Catholic Church are both online; I wuse these a great deal.

No they don’t. First of all, the Catholic Church gave these guys the New Testament. The Bible was written by Catholics for Catholics. The problem is their erroneous understanding of a Catholic Document, the Bible. Nothing in Catholic Teaching contradicts the Bible.

God Bless.
Maybe I didn’t make myself clear. By a shred of truth I meant that each date is tied in some way to an event in the Church which the lister chooses to almost completely misunderstand. The event although not described accurately is what this person is trying to hang on the dates. As I said in my first post the Bible does not contradict scripture or vice versa, but everything in Tradition is not written in the Bible, only part of it. Not all the Dogma and or Doctrines of the Church are found in scripture, but that is silence on the matter, not contradiction. God bless you too.

The quote appears to find its roots in Lorraine Boettner’s Roman Catholicism. I am working my way thru this book. Its hard going for me for two reasons. First, the argumentation for and against is poorly referenced. Second, some, many, of the statements are so outrageous as to make me question the entire book. Dave Hunt’s books use this same method. A series of footnoted statements ending with a conclusion not referenced at all.
